DEFINITION

The Director of Philanthropy serves under the direction of the Executive Director of Institutional Advancement and Foundation. The incumbent is charged with maximizing financial gift support to Cuesta College by seeking private and public contributions to increase the margin of excellence for educational programs and services. The incumbent will be one of the Directors responsible for managing and implementation of fundraising strategies for institutional priorities. In working with the Executive Director and Cuesta College Foundation staff, the incumbent is responsible for specific fundraising programs engaging corporations, foundations, and individuals who are current/potential donors.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Director of Philanthropy position is distinguished from other positions in that the incumbent will work with the Executive Director to spearhead development efforts as the Foundation continues to grow. This position works with a high degree of independence, keeping the Executive Director informed of unanticipated issues that may arise and recommending actions and solutions to such situations. The incumbent must possess an understanding of current philanthropic and public relations interest with individuals, foundations and corporations and maintain the necessary relations through regular contact. The Director will plan, manage and implement development practices that will encourage and engage internal and external support of Cuesta College. The Director shall implement the philosophy and policies of the District and ensure that the department strives to achieve the District's mission, vision, and institutional goals.

The incumbent in this position supports institutional effectiveness by facilitating advancement practices that encourage and engage internal and external support of Cuesta College.

Serving all of San Luis Obispo County, Cuesta College has provided comprehensive associate degree offerings, certificates, and community programs to the region since 1964. The main campus is located along scenic Highway 1, west of San Luis Obispo and east of the beaches of the Pacific Ocean. Cuesta College has a North County Campus in Paso Robles, and South County Center, in Arroyo Grande.

Essential Functions & Qualifications


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Plan, manage and implement select fundraising strategies for annual fundraising efforts, major gifts, planned gifts, specific projects or philanthropic programs;
  • Coordinate and make philanthropic asks of current and potential supporters of the District;
  • Coordinate publications, direct mail promotions, and other materials needed for fundraising activities;
  • Develop and implement marketing strategies to promote a comprehensive gift program;
  • Work with District leadership to identify funding strategies for specific projects and fundraising techniques;
  • Work with Foundation Board of Directors, ambassador groups and volunteers on directed fundraising efforts;
  • Implement selected donor cultivation, acknowledgement, and stewardship strategies aimed at donor prospects;
  • Work with Foundation staff in the maintenance of donor and prospect records and mailing lists for programs related to fundraising strategies and campaigns;
  • Provide support for gift processing as needed;
  • Compile, analyze, and report statistical and financial data;
  • Work with Foundation staff as part of a comprehensive donor stewardship system, including prospect research, event participation, and maintaining database information;
  • Participate on District committees and processes as directed;
  • Represent the District in partnership collaboratives in community, governmental, and professional organizations as appropriate and/or as assigned;
  • Interpret and apply rules, regulations, and District policies; and
  • Perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Required
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university;
Preferred
  • Master's degree;

Experience:
Required
  • Five years progressively responsible experience in resource development, fundraising, alumni programs, volunteer and community relations, and management responsibilities;
  • Fundraising experience including: prospect research, donor cultivation and recognition, successful development of major gifts, fundraising leadership, and management of fundraising activities/ programs;
  • Community organization and development;
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully motivate and supervise volunteers; and
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work in a multi-project environment.
Preferred
  • Experience in college or university fundraising;

Knowledge of:
  • Supervisory/administrative principles and practices;
  • Nonprofit business practices and procedures;
  • Donor tracking software;
  • Current technologies, personal computer, and associated office software such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and/or database software;
  • Correct usage of English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; and District policies and procedures.
Preferred
  • Knowledge of community college or university practices and procedures

Ability to:
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties; and
  • Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and of staff and students with physical and learning disabilities.

Physical ability to:
  • Read and comprehend printed matter and text and data on computer monitors;
  • Communicate intelligibly and effectively via speech, telephone, written correspondence, and/or email;
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time;
  • Lift and/or carry 25 pounds; and
  • Exert manual dexterity sufficient for keyboard and other office equipment operation.

License and Certificates (current within the last year):
Required
  • Valid driver's license and eligible to obtain California driver's license upon hire.

    SALARY SCHEDULE
    Below is the full salary schedule range for this position, steps A through E. Per Cuesta College's bargaining agreement, new employees are placed at Steps A through C, which is the anticipated hiring range also listed below.   • Salary Schedule Range: $8,901 - $10,819 per month.
  • Anticipated Hiring Range: $8,901 - $9,813 per month.
