SUMMARY:

Joining the University of Richmond Museums under new leadership, the Deputy Director and Curator of Exhibitions will bring fresh curatorial energy and expertise to the exhibition program of the Joel and Lila Harnett Museum of Art. The Executive Director seeks an experienced and collaborative art curator with university teaching experience and a genuine appreciation for academic museums. The DDCE will co-curate with the Executive Director, with faculty from various disciplines, with students, and with community partners, while also pursuing original exhibitions in their areas of interest. They will offer one museum studies course of their own design per year through the Department of Art & Art History. Applications are welcome from curators with expertise in any area of art history, but all candidates should expect to support exhibitions of global and contemporary scope in this role.

With 4,000 sq ft of exhibition space dedicated to rotating special exhibitions, the Harnett Museum presents between two and four exhibitions per academic year. The Museum celebrates its legacy collection of works on paper (in the Joel and Lila Harnett Print Study Center) and aims to expand and diversify the cultural representation of its existing collection of art and visual culture. The DDCE will be a close partner to the Executive Director in art acquisitions (and de-accessions), exhibition planning and management, and building stronger partnerships with Richmond's arts, culture, history, and community organizations.

This position works closely with the Curator for Academic Engagement, the Collections Manager/TMS Administrator, the Chief Preparator, the Curator of Programs, and the Registrar/Curator of Natural Science Collections (who oversees the Lora Robins Gallery collection).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Curates exhibitions at the Harnett Museum of Art, co-curates exhibitions with faculty and students, and advises on related programming. May also manage traveling exhibitions
• Teaches one museum studies course of choice per year in the department of Art & Art History. Mentors undergraduate interns in museum-related projects
• As Deputy Director, is responsible for the administration of the Museums in the Executive Director's absence
• Writes and edits interpretive materials for exhibitions and collections, occasional catalogs or brochures, and promotional materials
• Trains student employees to give tours of exhibitions
• Researches the permanent collection
• Joins the Museum team to launch a new website
• Assists in fundraising and grant-writing activities related to the collections and exhibitions. Oversees grant reporting with Director of Operations
• Participates in university committees and partners with the Executive Director on faculty advisory committee
• Cultivates collectors and prospective donors

Administration:

• Assists the Executive Director in establishing programmatic plans, overall institutional strategy, and developing the staff

Collections:

• Research, increase, and exhibit the Museum's permanent collections.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Knowledge of art history and visual culture
• Knowledge of best practices in museum curation and collection building
• Knowledge of university pedagogy; teaching and academic research skills
• Working knowledge of/ability to learn art database search techniques
• Advanced oral and written communication skills
• Advanced word processing, PowerPoint and TMS collections database skills

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

• MA required in art history or closely related field, with 5-7 years of work experience in a museum as a curator and/or museum educator
• Experience in an academic museum with a teaching mission
• Experience curating art exhibitions, including requesting loans from other institutions
• University teaching experience or teaching assistant experience
• Some experience managing traveling exhibitions is desirable
• Experience with grant writing for exhibitions is a plus

WORK HOURS:

• Full-time, exempt position
• Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week; occasional evening and weekend events and tours

SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 9 (Hiring Range $73,008.00 to $100,402.00 annually)
