Web Application & Database Developer

JOB DESCRIPTION
This position is in the Duke Law School Web Services group, a unit of Law Academic Technologies. The developer will coordinate with the manager of the group on priorities and tasks. The developer will scope, recommend, plan, design, test and implement web applications and content management systems for the law school. The developer will work with all groups in Academic Technologies and with other law school departments to ensure that resources are being employed efficiently and that where information is collected digitally best-practice data security principles are followed. The developer will work on various new and ongoing projects that have an impact on the academic mission of the law school.

Specific duties and responsibilities:
1. Design, code, test and de-bug new databases or database components. Modify and enhance existing databases. Perform routine maintenance. Program database changes to address invalid data. Conceptualize and create reporting tools as needed for staff and others. Communicate relational database methodologies and/or data modeling logic to non-technical staff.

2. Analyze, debug, maintain and revise existing web-based programs to ensure operating proficiency or to adapt programs to new requirements.

3. Maintain and enhance Law School web presences using Drupal and WordPress, improving database efficiency. Work with Web Services team to determine upgrade paths.

4. Within Web Services' priorities and timelines, work with clients to scope, design, test, implement and maintain web applications that positively impact the law school's mission.

5. Work with the Law Systems group to develop scripts, applications, and other automated tools to reduce the administrative burden and speed services.

6. Prepare training materials and give presentations to users as appropriate. Serve as liaison to clients regarding special requests and programming/custom application operational issues as they arise. Write or contribute to instructions or manuals to guide end users. Lead or train others in using applications.

7. Participate in on-call rotation, responding to the Web updates email queue, which may require seven-day accessibility and responsiveness.

8. Perform other duties as required by the Web Services manager or the Associate Dean for Academic Technologies.

Education/Training:
Required Education

Requires knowledge of basic technology principles normally acquired through two years of post-secondary education or the equivalent.

Preferred:
BA/BS degree or equivalent relevant training in information technology.

Experience Required:
Proficient in PHP and MySQL, as well as fluent familiarity with CSS and XHTML. Experience with and working knowledge of content management systems Drupal and WordPress. WebServer & LAMP stack configuration. Linux/Unix operating system installation and configuration. System monitoring and alerting. GitHub and Gitlab version control. LDAP directory knowledge. SMTP/Postfix/Sendmail.
