ISGS is seeking to hire a Visiting Scientific Specialist, GIS to participate in research activities related to coal mines and data. Position is based in Champaign, Illinois.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reconstruct mine history and production from archival sources.
  • Digitize and edit data on coal mines and related geology.
  • Produce mined-out area quadrangle maps and directories of Illinois coal mines.
  • Develop and maintain stratigraphic and coal mine research databases.
  • Prepare project deliverables including preparing reports and publications, transferring databases to project sponsors, making presentations, and maintaining web applications for public data dissemination.
  • Add to Survey and PRI databases and knowledge through production, storage, and analysis of contract produced data.
  • Prepare graphics and GIS files for distribution on the Survey website.
  • Support Survey and PRI staff with data collection, interpretation and analysis.
  • Collaborate with Survey staff, University of Illinois faculty, and external colleagues to provide integrated interpretations and applications to existing and new research programs.
  • Enhance the reputation of the Survey and PRI at the state, national, and international levels.
  • Respond to requests by staff, agencies, industry, and the public.
  • Represent the Survey and PRI at meetings and other venues in areas of expertise.
  • Conduct, develop, and participate in research and service activities.
  • Perform other duties as needed to further the mission and goals of PRI.
  • Keep abreast of developments in this discipline.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in geography, geology, or related field. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position. Experience in GIS software (preferably ArcGIS/ESRI) and graphics (preferably Adobe Design Suite). Ability to read and interpret geologic, topographic, and other scientific maps. Ability to edit data and maps. Skilled in word processing, spreadsheet, database management, and ArcGIS/ESRI software. Ability to use hardware peripherals such as scanners, plotters, and printers. Ability to write comprehensive reports and proposals. Ability to work independently. Ability to prioritize, accomplish tasks, and meet deadlines. Ability and willingness to contribute as part of a team. Effective communication, personal relations, organizational, teamwork, and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities with stringent deadlines, under minimal supervision. Attention to detail and sound judgment. Proficiency in commonly employed software and databases. Valid driver's license. Must be able to occasionally travel to mines, company offices, and libraries in and adjacent to Illinois to collect data. Some overnight travel may be required.

Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in geography, geology, or related field. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position.

This is a full-time visiting academic professional appointment renewable annually based on satisfactory progress in the position and continued funding. Position may become a regular, non-visiting position at a later date depending on funding and programmatic need. The starting date is negotiable and the salary is commensurate with experience.
