As the Director of Management and Leadership Development (MLD) in Gaithersburg, MD you'll play a pivotal role in developing the critical capabilities of our people leaders to make a positive impact on both our internal and external customer engagement. North American Commercial is the 'face' of AstraZeneca and MedImmune to our many healthcare clients. They represent many of the most well recognized and respected products in the industry and build strong relationships with healthcare professionals.

AstraZeneca's vision in Oncology is to help patients by redefining the cancer-treatment paradigm, with the aim of bringing six new cancer medicines to patients between 2013 and 2020. A broad pipeline of next-generation medicines is focused principally on four disease areas - breast, ovarian, lung and hematological cancers. As well as other tumor types, these are being targeted through four key platforms - immunotherapy, the genetic drivers of cancer and resistance, DNA damage repair, and antibody drug conjugates, underpinned by personalized healthcare and biomarker technologies.

The MLD Director will be a key member of the Oncology Training and Development leadership team and will be responsible for leading the design, development, and implementation of innovative and experiential leadership capability programs. These programs will focus how our first and second line leaders develop and sustain critical capabilities required for success in the Oncology marketplace such as Agility, Emotional Intelligence, Coaching, and Building a Winning Culture.

This individual will lead the skill and competency needs assessment to provide robust, impactful training that is aligned with the leaders' objectives and strategies. This will include identifying, designing, delivering, and evaluating learning opportunities. As a key member of the Oncology training team, the MLD Director will also liaise with other functional areas including brand and sales leadership and with colleagues in other areas such as Human Resources and Global Talent & Development to name a few. Ensuring success of current programs (i.e. AMP, LIFT, CLDP) are critical; while designing and developing for the next level of programs to support second line leader development and a program for those first line managers who aspire to be second line leaders. This role will include some travel for field rides, national/regional sales meetings, relevant talent & development conferences and other training events.

The Director will conduct on going needs analysis and leverage insights to inform the training strategies. curricula, and just in time assets to ensure that the programs are comprehensive and anticipating any evolving leadership capabilities required for our people leaders to succeed in the Oncology marketplace. Additionally, the Director will be required to oversee training products and programs, manage a budget designated for MLD, and assess impact of the training programs/events. This role will be accountable to ensure all curricula are properly maintained and approved per AZ policies and guidelines.

Key Skills for Role:

  • Manage the development, implementation and embedding of the Leadership Development curricula with a key focus on impact for First and Second Line Leaders
  • Demonstrate cross functional leadership and collaboration across Therapeutic Areas and other internal cross functional teams to ensure needs are captured and considered in Leadership Development Program decisions
  • Lead Program delivery & facilitation of leadership content to variety of learners spanning from First Line Managers to Senior Leaders
  • Shape and develop innovative solutions to help us respond to future needs and build comprehensive annual communications plans to keep program awareness high and behavior sustainment strong
  • Evaluate learning trends to ensure programs that are designed are considering the best adult learning principles to match learnings styles and needs of our audience (i.e. just in time, digital, microlearnings, badging, etc)
  • To manage and implement diagnostics and key metrics for measurement for program improvement and impact
  • Develop & lead the communication strategy for transparency of the Leadership Development programs, their objectives, and impact

Required:

Minimum of 7 years of a blend of Pharmaceutical/Biotech/Oncology experience

Minimum of 3 years of People Management Experience with Field Management preferred

In-depth knowledge of leading Leadership Principles and Models

Preferred:

BA/BS degree (MBA/MS/MA preferred)

Minimum of 1 year of training experience

An ability to effectively collaborate with and align key stakeholders

Excellent oral and written skills

Project management skills

Knowledge of adult learning principles
