The Associate Urban Designer

  • Supports planners, designers, and other professionals who are responsible for designing the city's plans, with both internal and external teams
  • Collaborates with various department members, city agencies, community members, and private sector partners
  • Works independently focusing on end results and the implementation of the vision, goals, and objectives of the Planning Division while under general supervision

Essential Functions

Develops innovative and comprehensive urban design plans and proposals using a collaborative design process. Creates a wide variety of graphic products for urban design, including concept sketches, plans, sections, digital models, maps, and diagrams using a number of different systems, including drafting software, 3D modeling software, and rendering software. Creates composites and other renderings using graphic editing software. (30%)

Prepares design information for presentations and reports for both internal and external review by other city departments, the mayor and city council, community groups, and the general public. (20%)

Assists in planning, conducting and reporting for public meetings with community groups and design professionals to address questions of design and urbanism. Initiates and organizes exhibitions, publications, presentations, conferences and design workshops. (25%)

Researches projects by reviewing ordinances, guidelines, local opinions through field interviews and studies, and physical sites in preparation for design. Researches and documents historic and contemporary precedents to help the design group develop its design resources. (15%)

Collaborates closely with team members in other divisions of the department as well as other departments within the city to ensure the city's values, priorities, and interests are reconciled and represented in design plans. (10%)

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Urban Design, City/Urban Planning, Architecture, or Landscape architecture and
  • 4 years of related experience or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

Working knowledge of:
  • Drafting software, 3D modeling software, graphic design and photo editing software, 2D and 3D rendering software
  • Database, word processing, and spreadsheet software

Knowledge of:
  • Urban design and planning
  • Design principles
  • Innovative design practices
  • Demonstrated creative ability, including urban, architectural, landscape architectural and/or graphic design

Ability to:
  • Engage with community members
  • Communicate through writing and drawing
  • Display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of City employees, the general public and other organizations
  • Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance
  • Complete assignments in a timely fashion
  • Understand and comply with all rules, policies, and regulations
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance
  • Perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
  • Master's Degree in Urban Design, City/Urban Planning, Architecture, or Landscape Architecture

Licensing And Other Requirements
  • Valid state-issued driver's license
Special Requirements
Applicants must be able to pass:
  • City of Boise background check processes which includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation
  • Driving Record Check

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is always lifting/carrying up to 10 pounds and frequently lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 10 pounds and frequently pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds. The noise level is frequently moderate. Work includes the sensory ability to talk and hear. Work in this position also includes close vision. Employees will sit, stand, walk, reach and grasp. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions and outdoor weather conditions. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position.
This position works community events, charrettes, and scheduled evening meetings/public hearings as required.
