Description:
Under the direction of the Radiology Manager and the technical direction of the Radiologist, performs ultrasonic diagnostic procedures for patients as ordered with ultrasound equipment for the radiologist to interpret. Understands anatomy and physiology of the human body and the disease process, where applicable to ultrasound. Initiates life support measures when required. Adheres to the mission and values of Hawarden Regional Healthcare in all aspects of job performance.

Essential Job Functional Competencies:

  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service/care appropriate to the age of the patients served, in accordance with Hawarden Regional Healthcare standards. Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, the Compliance Accountability Program, Code of Ethics, and HRH policies and procedures, including all provisions of the Health Insurance Portability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). In order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior by implementing the organizational vision, values, and mission.
  • Performs the ultrasound (sonogram) procedure for the Radiologist to interpret. Explains procedures to patient to ensure cooperation and optimum test results.
  • Prepares patient for procedure by assisting to proper position. Answers any questions or concerns raised by patient. Reports any variance in patient condition. Selects appropriate transducer, depending upon the depth of field, organ to be identified, etc. Conducts scanning procedures using ultrasound equipment. Make hard copy images as directed.
  • Assist physician in such procedures as needle biopsies, amniocentesis, renal biopsies, etc. Scan patient, mark patient's body, determine angle for puncture, and assist as necessary, maintaining sterile field.
  • Correlates the ultrasound exam with other tests and preparations to best pronounce the disease process.
  • Performs care and light maintenance of the ultrasound equipment, imaging equipment and the ultrasound equipment for accurate usage, performance and can assess equipment problems. Maintains records as needed by department, OSHA, and other regulatory bodies.
  • Performs miscellaneous departmental administrative tasks, such as answering the telephone, filing, checking and updating patient files, calling reports to patient's floors, etc., and when necessary, serves as patient escort.
  • Possess the ability to complete work efficiently with little or no supervision and under stressful patient exam schedules.
  • Demonstrates profession conduct towards patients, staff, visitors, and physicians.
  • Maintains the privacy and confidentiality of the patient, their test results and records.
  • Assists in performing first aid in emergency cases.
  • Recognizes and communicates issues/occurrences utilizing established lines of authority and assists in identifying ways to resolve variances or unacceptable outcomes.
  • Maintains stock supplies in exam rooms.
  • Must have a general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. Healthstream, internet, etc.)
  • Actively participates in departmental meetings, committees, conferences, and in services. Is knowledgeable of and complies with Safety and Infection Control Policies & Procedures. Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement activities as requested. Keeps up to date on new procedures and research. Maintains confidentiality of information pertaining to clients, physicians, employees and HRH business.
  • Completes all mandatory training such as Healthstream, The Patient Experience, Safe Choices, Crucial Conversations and any other training as designated by Administration.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Recommended ARDMS certification. If not ARDMS, prior experience in general ultrasound is required.

Maintains certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).

Is able to communicate effectively with all members of the health care team.

Is able to perform a variety of duties characterized by frequent change.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must successfully pass pre-employment physical examination, drug screening, and must adhere to applicable organizational requirements on an annual basis for Employee Health Directives.

Primarily works inside with frequent sitting, walking, standing, bending and occasional lifting of supplies.

Uses appropriate safety transfer techniques and body mechanics when moving, transporting, etc., of patients or equipment, sometimes in excess of 50 pounds.

Must be able to function under frequent stressful situations.

Must understand and accept the possibility of exposure to environmental elements, such as inclement weather, dust, noise, chemicals and/or chemical fumes, and infectious disease.

Regular and physical attendance at work is an essential function of the job.
