American Sign Language Program

Gallaudet's American Sign Language Program in the School of Language, Education & Culture seeks a tenure track or pre-tenure track faculty member to teach within the ASL Department. This individual will be instrumental in modeling exemplary pedagogy and engage colleagues & students in scholarships, grants and other professional activities in some of these following areas of inquiry: sign language studies, language acquisition, language rights, language planning, linguistic diversity, and the scholarship of teaching & learning. Applicants should be proficient in the use of technology & digital media production to teach & to disseminate scholarship. Applicants must demonstrate awareness of and commitment to support the multilingual & multicultural dimensions of the Deaf experience & community.The faculty position may be non-resident faculty to be negotiated with the School Director and Dean of Faculty.Responsibilities:
    Teach courses for the American Sign Language Department, School of Language, Education, and Culture and/or the General Education programDevelop curriculum to support the ASL program's student learning outcomes. Engage in research and seek external funding to support projects designed to advance scholarship with faculty and students in the ASL program. Advise and mentor students.Arrange and supervise practicum and internship placements.Assist with program assessment, student recruitment and retention efforts.Engage in scholarship, including research and program development.Participate in department and university faculty activities and professional serviceOther duties as assigned.
Requirements:
    Terminal degree strongly preferred, though applicants who are admitted in a terminal degree program at the time of interview may be considered for a pre tenure track position which is designed to enable faculty to complete their Ph.D. before the tenure clock begins. The Pre-Tenure Track status includes a one-course release per semester to focus on teaching and scholarship and lasts up to three years prior to converting to a tenure track position based on annual reappointment.Academic degrees must be in a related field, including but not limited to linguistics, applied linguistics, education, policy, language planning and critical literacy studies.At least 3 years of postsecondary teaching experience, in fields of sign language and Deaf culture. Possession of American Sign Language Teachers Association certification is preferred. Applicants must also be fluent in American Sign Language. Native or native-like fluency in American Sign Language. Submit evidence of American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) proficiency level of 4. Individuals with native-like fluency in another sign language would be required to demonstrate at least a rating of 3+ on the ASLPI.
Rank and salary: Rank and salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Appointment will be for the regular nine-month academic year.
