Position Overview

The position of Technologist will be responsible for maintaining and operation of industrial scale molten aluminum equipment and processes in a research environment. The individual is responsible for his safety and the safety of those around them. The individual will develop specialized knowledge of Novelis DC ingot casting with a strong focus on Novelis Continuous Casting technology, including setup, operation, and maintenance of the equipment. The individual will also perform routine testing and characterization in a specific technical competency area. Be responsible for general knowledge and application of their technical discipline in a lab. Individual will work under close supervision where tasks are defined by supervisor, project leader or senior technical staff and supports minor project phases.

Responsibilities

• Practice safe working practices. Ensure that EHS considerations are a priority in any new technology, product, or process implementation
• Distinguish when or where the laboratory-tested Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) are applicable and when controlled deviation is applicable and acceptable
• Be able to merge general process knowledge with unique equipment or processes to be designed, manufactured or tested without deviating from classical applications of scientific knowledge
• Perform testing and analysis of moderate complexity; maintains and diagnoses critical equipment, process or experiment performance in their lab or pilot area
• Recommend product quality improvements by problem solving through the analysis of the root cause of defects
• Instinctively step out of normal design and manufacturing approaches to generate or produce equipment distinctly above and beyond the industry's current supply
• Document findings; rigor in organization and daily documentation
• Maintain daily to-do list, and make diary entries in each project log

Qualifications

• High School diploma required. AA in relevant field or equivalent math/technology background
• 2+ years of experience in industrial workforce. Experience in molten aluminum industry, preferably in DC casting, is a plus
• Experience running a continuous roll caster
• Solid computer skills with Microsoft Office and systems analysis

• Working knowledge of project management tools/principles for work on a particular piece of equipment, process or program of tests.
• Independently address moderately complex problems
• Excellent communication skills. Will need to clearly communicate technical information or results effectively to colleagues, external suppliers, plant employees and customers
• Able to balance multiple priorities across multiple projects or service group requests
