Position Summary

The mission of the San Diego State University Global Campus is "To provide self-support education and training to enhance careers and transform lives and organizations." SDSU Global Campus serves as a principal University liaison with the greater San Diego community and provides a wide variety of traditional and nontraditional, credit and noncredit educational experiences designed to fit the lifestyle and expectations of working adults and other lifelong learners.

The Student Success Advisor, in collaboration with the Director of Student Engagement and under the SDSU Global Campus Associate Dean and Chief Student Experience Officer & AVP of Student Affairs, provides academic advising and success coaching to students. This position aims to support students in achieving academic success in transition to and during their tenure within SDSU Global Campus.

The Student Success Advisor will promote and foster academic success, leadership, personal development and professional growth; cultivate community for students through the committed, collaborative, effort and support of faculty, staff, co-curricular activities, and the greater San Diego community; and create, collaborate on and implement programs and services which aid in the recruitment, retention, success and graduation of Global Campus students.

The incumbent is also responsible for proactively connecting with an assigned caseload of students enrolled in general online and/or microsite degree programs to provide appropriate academic advising, mentoring and success planning to support students in reaching personal and academic goals.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.

Licenses and/or Certifications Required:

The selected candidate must meet specific requirements, as described in The California State University Use of University and Private Vehicle Guidelines, and have a supervisor's permission before using a university vehicle or personal vehicle for university business. The requirements include verification of the employee's driving record, proof of adequate insurance coverage, and completion of defensive driver training. Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting historically underserved populations
  • Prior experience with counseling and academic advising of students
  • Demonstrated history of supporting students in crisis

Specialized Skills
  • Knowledge, sensitivity, and understanding of the social, political, personal, and cross-cultural needs of historically underrepresented and underserved students.
  • Ability to collaborate and work with other units regarding issues of diversity and community.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with students.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and excellent judgment in responding to conversional, sensitive, and/or emotional issues and situations.
  • Ability to effectively use Google, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint to create and analyze reports, manage data, resource materials and presentations.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $4,304 per month.

Classification Salary Range: $4,304 - $6,120 per month.

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
