Position Summary:

Under direct/indirect supervision follows approved infection control, quality assurance and departmental policies and procedures. Proficiently collects, cleans, decontaminates, disinfects, and/or sterilizes dental instruments and dental surgical instruments, pouches and/ or packs (all reusable dental instruments and patient care equipment) for the Dental Clinic. Inventories, restocks, and distributes instruments to the proper storage location for sterilized instruments. Works in a Dental's sterile processing area cleaning, preparing, assembling, sterilizing, preparing packs, instruments, and cassettes for all dental areas. Technician will work cleaning, preparing, assembling instruments cassettes and preparing pouches and wrapped packs for sterilization, store sterilized instruments, cassettes, pouches and wraps according to manufacturer's instruction for use and YKHC and YKHC Dental Clinic policies and procedures. May assist in departmental in-services and training.

Position Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One-year experience in a medical/ dental setting performing the duties of a sterile processing technician preferred. If candidate has no prior experience, they must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of aseptic techniques and standard precautions throughout the sterilization process at the completion of a 90 day training period. Completion of at least one month of employment and training as a Dental Assistant Trainee or have limited previous experience as a dental assistant.
  • Individual must be willing/ qualified to obtain a certification as a Sterile Processing Technician from either CBSPT or IAHCSMM certifying agencies within 18 months of accepting this position.
  • Responsible to learn to distinguish all dental instruments within the Dental Department.
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn sterilization procedures, equipment, instruments, wrapping and repackaging of instruments. Knowledge or willingness to learn inventory system and maintain adequate inventory levels of supplies and equipment within the Dental department.
