General summary/purpose:

Jhpiego's Technical Leadership and Innovation (TLI) office drives impact across Jhpiego's core areas of work in women's health (maternal and newborn health, reproductive health and family planning, and women's cancers), infectious disease (HIV/AIDS, Malaria, COVID response/global health security) and health systems strengthening (primary health care, immunization, safe surgery). This dynamic team of technical leaders provides “best in class” technical leadership and support responsive to country needs and in pursuit of accelerated impact.

Jhpiego's newly formed Innovation Hub, which sits within TLI, brings together a multi-disciplinary team of change agents focused on frontier technology, service delivery innovations, cutting-edge approaches to human resource capacity building, human centered design, and market-driven solutions. The team works together both with technical leaders within TLI and country and project leaders across the organization to deeply analyze global health challenges and identify disruptive solutions including new business models, market-driven approaches, novel service delivery models and transformative innovations.

Jhpiego is seeking an exceptionally dynamic and effective leader to harness market-based solutions - including market shaping, market access and innovative finance - to accelerate the introduction and scale of cutting-edge innovations, leverage private capital, and drive transformative impact across the organization's portfolio of programs in 35 countries.

The Sr. Technical Advisor, Market Shaping provides highest quality technical guidance to accelerate the adoption of transformative product, programmatic and technology innovations in LMICs for maximum global health impact. The Sr. Advisor will work with technical teams across Jhpiego to build, enhance and strengthen Jhpiego's collaboration with innovation partners in the academic, public, private, and research sectors at global and regional levels, leveraging market-based approaches and solutions. Through strategic global and country engagement, the

Sr. Technical Advisor, Market Shaping will support and facilitate rapid introduction of and/or access to these priority interventions and serve as a driver to promote new thinking, challenge the status quo and work toward improving the overall efficiency and sustainability of the health ecosystem and marketplace.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic vision and operational support to strengthen, grow and implement Jhpiego's market shaping and market access portfolio.
  • Accelerate Jhpiego's effort and positioning in global market shaping for key healthcare products and services
  • Possess, or rapidly develop, deep knowledge and strategic perspectives of select product markets, including analyzing and prioritizing critical bottlenecks to introduction, utilization and scale up for key global health interventions at the global and country level.
  • Drive activities utilizing a problem-centered approach, where a deep understanding of entrenched problems and country-specific root causes serves as the basis for decision making and portfolio prioritization
  • In close collaboration with Jhpiego's technical teams, develop and execute strategies on priority supply- and demand-side issues to accelerate introduction and utilization of priority interventions; efforts may include analyzing bottlenecks to uptake, designing introduction strategies, assessing market dynamics, encouraging entry of new suppliers, ensuring affordable pricing, supporting user research and segmentation, and maximizing efficiency in product development, manufacturing and procurement practices.
  • Develop strategic and analytical tools to address the market entry barriers, introduction and uptake challenges; apply them to product-specific challenges; and disseminate the approach and learnings for broader application across product categories and health sectors.
  • Utilize strong portfolio management to make recommendations regarding priorities within Jhpiego's market shaping and private sector engagement efforts
  • Support implementation of interventions by providing strategic, analytical, communication, and project management support to country teams, global and regional technical advisors, manufacturers, other key programmatic stakeholders
  • Ensure technical offices and missions have the tools to integrate best practices and lessons learned for product introduction, scale and uptake into their program planning.
  • Identify opportunities for building and expanding Jhpiego's role in upstream market shaping efforts by fostering and managing catalytic networks and key relationships with manufacturers, developers and other implementing organizations as well as senior officials from foundations and governmental, multilateral and nongovernmental organizations to advance product introduction, scale up and uptake priorities.
  • Work closely with Technical Leaders within TLI and the New Program Development Team to identify, design and pursue strategic new opportunities for Jhpiego's intervention into Market Shaping activities
  • Work closely with country and programmatic teams to generate user insights and consumer feedback to shape and strengthen market shaping efforts.
  • Represent Jhpiego at priority conferences, meetings, and on key market shaping working groups at global and regional levels
  • Keep abreast of emerging research, best practices and innovations in market shaping in healthcare
  • Identify and supplement capacity building needs among team members for market shaping interventions
  • Manage and efficiently utilize technical and financial resources in assigned areas of work
  • Identify and manage external consultants and resources to ensure they achieve defined milestones on time and within budget, providing value for Jhpiego's investment


  • Minimum qualifications (mandatory):
  • Advanced degree in business administration, management, public health, international affairs, or a related field
  • 7 years' private sector work experience, ideally in healthcare strategy consulting, business, marketing, and corporate development, or other fields that require deep understanding of marketplace dynamics, product introduction, and product uptake
  • 12+ years strongly preferred
  • Experience working in, or directly with, the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or medical device industry preferred
  • Experience and knowledge of principles and approaches of implementation research for testing, prototyping and contextualization of new product and service innovations
  • Experience creating quantitative models, costing tools, demand forecasts, health impact models and/or conducting and analyzing market research studies to inform global or country-level decision-making
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and demonstrated experience utilizing innovation to effectuate disruptive change in health care systems of low and middle-income countries
  • Demonstrated success working with key stakeholders in both the public and private sectors, particularly in resource-constrained countries preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience utilizing key principles and approaches to market shaping in healthcare in LMIC context
  • In-depth understanding of private sector engagement strategies for advancing local innovation and entrepreneurial ventures
  • Ability to absorb and synthesize a broad range of information, including financial, regulatory, clinical, demographic, marketing and scientific information
  • Proven leadership and management skills and proven record of working effectively with and leading diverse teams of professionals particularly in resource-constrained country settings
  • Excellent understanding of the donor landscape for funding opportunities
  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment and in challenging developing country settings
  • Proven ability to work in a complex, fast-paced, multi-cultural environment with multiple tasks and short deadlines
  • Entrepreneurial and results-oriented mindset, comfortable with uncertainty, willing to take calculated risks, and proven ability to deliver results
  • Proven collaborator with the ability to coach, mentor and develop technical capacity in regional and national projects and technical staff
  • Experience in analytics or statistical software (e.g. R or STATA), data visualization software (e.g. Tableau), and/or geospatial mapping a plus
  • Demonstrated experience using human-centered design, design thinking or other common approaches to strengthening a culture of innovation a plus
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally 30% of time
