Job Info

At Intuitive, we believe that minimally invasive care is life-enhancing care. Through ingenuity and intelligent technology, we expand the potential of physicians to heal without constraints. Our mission is our guiding force; our culture is the DNA that makes us unique.

As a pioneer in robotic-assisted surgery (RAS), we have been expanding our innovations through technology to help make a difference in the world. For 25 years, human ingenuity has guided our journey to help solve some of healthcare’s complex challenges.

We believe a great idea can come from anywhere—inclusion and mutual respect are vital to our culture. We value character grounded in integrity, a strong capacity to learn, the energy to get things done, and diverse experiences to help us think in new ways. We actively invest in our team members to support their long-term growth so they can continue to advance our mission and strive to achieve their highest potential.

Join a team committed to taking big leaps forward for a global community of healthcare professionals and their patients. Together, let’s help to advance the world of minimally invasive care.

Primary Function of Position:

Systems Analysts (Robotic Control Engineers) at Intuitive Surgical perform a central role in the design, development, and support of new products in the da Vinci Surgery product line. Systems Analysts are primarily responsible for the robotic manipulator control algorithms, tele-robotic motion fidelity and safety algorithms for new surgical robots and instruments. This responsibility crosses into electrical, mechanical, software, control, user interface and safety engineering where all the subsystems are integrated together.

Roles and Responsibilities:

A Systems Analyst in this product development role will provide early design input, quickly prove out new designs, and seek out solutions to subtle and challenging problems in complex electromechanical systems.  The successful candidate will design and implement new software features for manipulators and instruments. Examples include immersive haptic features for surgeon interfaces, gravity compensation of a robotic mechanism, and coordinated motion of robot end effector. This involves working with a high capacity interdisciplinary team that iterates quickly. The Systems Analyst’s contributions will start in the early design phase of products and continue until the products are shipping to customers with the highest quality and reliability.

Key responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the design of new surgical platforms through analysis and characterization of early prototypes.
  • Develop world-class, novel haptic experiences for surgeons.
  • Facilitate mechanical, hardware, and software integration of new products.
  • Participate in clinical observations and experiments to identify requirements and evaluate surgical performance
  • Analyze complex electromechanical devices for dynamic safety and clinical risk
  • Implement motion control and create safety monitoring algorithms based on sound physics
  • Document and pursue intellectual property
  • Improve group work-flow through tool building and teaching others
  • Support and track system performance as it moves from design to manufacturing.

Skill/Job Requirements:

  • Minimum PhD (preferred) or MS in robotics-related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in related field.
  • Experience with haptic devices and/or haptic interactions is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrate intuitive understanding of mechanical phenomena with ability to do rigorous modeling and analysis.
  • Experience in hardware and software integration of complex electromechanical systems and/or serial-arm robot kinematics is preferred.
  • C/C++ and Matlab programming skills. Knowledge of Python is a plus.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Ability to collaborate across disciplines and work independently when necessary
