The Role:

Moderna is seeking a motivated Sr. Research Associate with a strong background in separations and mass spectrometry (LC, LC/MS GC/MS, GC/FID). Experience with the analysis of small molecules such as lipids and polymers are preferred. This individual will primarily work with analytical development strategy teams and process chemistry teams, to enable impurity identification and characterization of lipids and drug product, by applying cutting-edge separations and mass spectrometry techniques. Here's What You'll Do:

  • Develop, optimize, and run LC/GC/MS/FID methods to characterize lipids and other small molecules
  • Employ Chemical ionization and atmospheric pressure ionization mass spectrometry techniques and sample derivatization techniques to enable structural elucidation of impurities by GC.
  • Work closely with process chemistry teams and analytical development strategy teams to support raw material testing, process optimization/development, and forced degradation studies.
  • Participate in data analysis and technical report writing
  • Be accountable for good documentation of experiments
  • Work closely with other scientists in analytical development as well as cross-functional groups

Here's What You'll Bring to the Table:
  • MS with at least 0-2 years of experience in analytical development or a bachelor's degree 2-5 years of experience
  • At least 2 years of demonstrated hands-on experience with liquid and/or gas chromatography, preferably with LC/MS, GC/MS and high-resolution mass spectrometry
  • (Preferred) Tandem mass spectrometry experience and organic chemistry knowledge
  • (Preferred) Familiarity with GC ionization techniques such as electron impact ionization, chemical ionization and atmospheric pressure ionization.
  • (Preferred) Experience with headspace GC-MS analysis for residual solvents
  • (Preferred) Familiarity with sample extraction/separation techniques such as SPME and head space
  • Organization and attention to detail; ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an eagerness to work with and support colleagues in other departments
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross functional teams and deliver results with minimal supervision
