Project Manager duties and responsibilities

Over the course of a project, the Project Manager will need to communicate with staff and clients, make decisions and monitor the progress of the project to keep it on schedule. Important duties and responsibilities for a Project Manager include:

• Creating long and short-term plans, to include setting targets for milestones, adhering to deadlines, and allocating resources
• Delegating tasks on the project to employees best positioned to complete them
• Identifying and managing potential risks and liabilities of multiple projects
• Assisting in the definition of project scope and goals
• Making effective decisions when presented with multiple options for how to progress with the project
• Serving as a point of contact for teams when multiple units are assigned to the same project to ensure team actions remain in synergy
• Communicating with executives or the board to keep the project aligned with their goals
• Performing quality control on the project throughout development to maintain the standards expected
• Adjusting schedules and targets on the project as needed
• Motivating people involved in the project to complete tasks on time in a functional organizational structure
• Ability to develop business case for project justifications inclusive of: Charter, Capital Expense Request, Project Plan, Resource Plan, Etc.
• Management of project budgets and project expenditures
• Relationship management of external customers and internal stakeholders

Skills and qualifications

• Understanding of the Project Management Institute (PMI) framework
• Knowledge of various project management methodologies (e.g., agile/scrum)
• Proven leadership skills

• Excellent communication (verbal/written), interpersonal, organizational, and negotiation skills

Education and training requirements

A minimum of a bachelor's degree in either engineering (manufacturing - preferred) or management. Master's degree is a plus.

Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification from the Project Management Institute or other recognized PMP certifications.

Project Manager experience requirements

Prior experience in related manufacturing leadership or management role utilizing the tools and processes included in the Project Management Body Of Knowledge (PMBOK).

Functional knowledge of project management software e.g. Microsoft Project or equivalent for planning, executing, and reporting project deliverables.

Strong manufacturing engineering experience.

Have worked in heavy manufacturing (foundry a plus) as well as 3+ years of management experience.

Prior experience managing a plant/operation move or restructuring a manufacturing operation is a plus.
