Job Description

Primary Function of Position:

Intuitive Surgical designs and manufactures highly complex robotic systems, endoscopes, instruments and accessories for use in surgery. We are looking for a hands-on, technically strong engineer to support new vision product development. The role will involve ownership of an opto-electromechanical system and accessories from proof of concept through detailed mechanical design, prototype manufacturing, qualification testing, and transition to full-scale manufacturing. The successful candidate has a track record on multidisciplinary teams from product concept through market launch. This person participates in creating system-wide architecture, has the proven ability map out schedules and work assignments, leads teams through concept and development, and plays an active hands-on role in solving challenging technical problems.

The successful candidate will utilize creativity and sound engineering judgment in the design of medical capital equipment components for volume manufacturing processes. They are expected to use engineering and analytical skills to conceptualize, develop, and verify new mechanical and opto-mechanical designs. They are responsible for key system components and will interface with suppliers and manufacturing to build high-quality hardware prototypes and productize new design. They should be capable of making sound decisions when faced with the time constraints and ambiguous or incomplete information typical of research and development.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Lead and influence cross-functional project teams in the design and development of new products with complex illumination and vision device functionality
  • Design and develop mechanical parts and assemblies for surgical illumination and vision systems, with careful consideration for mechanical design, kinematics, materials (plastics & metals) and stress analysis
  • Design highly manufacturable products with various manufacturing techniques such as machining, welding, sheet metal, casting, and injection molding
  • Analyze and test product designs. Including development of DOEs, data collection, and data analysis
  • Create product functional and design specifications
  • Vendor liaison to design new components to supplier inputs
  • Develop fixtures, alignment tools and processes to assemble products
  • Develop and perform component and subsystem verification tests and data collection
  • Collaborate to attract top talent and invest in mentorship and training to retain and support the career development of team members
  • Provide leadership by example to the mechanical engineering team and help foster an environment that encourages creativity, risk taking, and crisp execution
  • Navigate complex technical and programmatic situations by driving timely decision making and setting appropriate priorities to focus the team for success
  • Champion best practices for mechanical design while coaching and mentoring engineers
  • Observe clinical cases and participate in interviews with clinical experts to inform designs
  • Facilitate hardware and software integration of new prototypes and new products including surgical instruments, robotic manipulators, and imaging
  • Support production of final product by troubleshooting process and component problems
  • Provide engineering support to Manufacturing, Materials, Test Engineering, and Service to facilitate transfer of designs.
  • Participate in planning, staffing, budgeting, and project/program cost tracking
  • Document and communicate intellectual property
  • Develop Design History Files per FDA requirements

Qualifications

Skills, Experience, Education, & Training:

  • Minimum BS or higher in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent work experience in commercial, medical and/or consumer products
  • Minimum 10+ years of experience developing overall product mechanical architecture including thermal, mechanical, and optomechanical with consideration for electronic, software, and optical systems.
  • Extensive mechanical design and engineering background with demonstrable achievements.
  • Experience with design for machining & medium/high-volume injection molding experience a plus.
  • Proficient in all phases of the product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debug, verification, qualification, and transfer
  • High proficiency with 3D CAD (Solidworks preferred) and simulation tools (Matlab, Ansys etc.) that support design excellence.
  • Tolerance analysis of high complexity and precision mechanical designs with excellent understanding of GD&T principles and drafting standards.
  • Detailed knowledge of and experience on working with miniature parts, molded parts, PCAs, imaging and illumination systems is a huge plus
  • Experience with Design for moldability is a huge plus
  • Ability to create and own design documentation including mechanical CAD models, BOMs, product specifications, and test procedures.
  • Knowledge of illumination and optical systems, stress analysis, thermal design and tolerance analysis
  • Strong understanding of component selection criteria, and design for reliability and manufacturability.
  • Strong project management, planning, budgeting, and change management skills
  • Excellent teamwork skills with proven ability to cultivate collaboration across multiple disciplines to ensure timely project success
  • Excellent communication (written, verbal), presentation, and documentation skills
  • A passion for creating robust/reliable products and an excitement to learn and problem solve
  • Direct medical device experience is preferred but not required
