The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for contributing to the growth and profitability of the Hawthorne Gardening Company. The chosen candidate will lead the technical advancement of the Hardware category for Hawthorne Gardening Company by partnering with the Category Manager and team to plan and execute the product innovation pipeline that supports the business strategic goals. Hawthorne's hardware products are designed for use in indoor Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) and include benching and tray systems, irrigation, and harvest equipment. A portion of this role entails research, 2D/3D designing, developing, simulating, prototyping, validating, and testing current and new products specific to Hawthorne Gardening Company. The role will also support other product categories as needed.

Key Work Performed

  • Lead all technical advancements in the Hardware category to drive product development and process improvements such as concept, specification, product validation, and design to meet specified cost and performance parameters
  • Support other product categories' mechanical engineering needs as needed
  • Assist in the management of vendor relationships with domestic and international suppliers while also holding them accountable to product requirements and quality specifications
  • Seek out innovations above and beyond the supplier capabilities
  • Conceive, plan, and conduct research in problem areas or areas of opportunity for the business
  • Keep abreast of new technologies and competitive products for the purpose of recommending changes in existing programs or new programs warranted by such developments
  • Partner closely with the Category Managers to ensure they are armed with ample technical knowledge on the products they support
  • Aid in the creation and development of R&D product roadmaps
  • Aid in data analysis of market trends and competitive benchmarking
  • Aid category managers and product development with UX (user experience)
  • Support legacy products while working to update as needed
  • Participate in the initial production phases of product/process design and all subsequent manufacturing inquiries and problems
  • Travel up to 15% of the time, sometimes internationally

Minimum Requirements
A. Education:
  • MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, or related degree preferred
  • Focus in mechanical design, structural design, product development preferred

B. Experience:
  • 5-10 years experience in product development, preferably in hydro, CEA, or horticulture industry
  • Experience in 2D/3D mechanical design, engineering preferred
  • Solidworks, Solidworks PDM preferred
  • Injection molding / Thermoforming experience a plus

C. Skills and Abilities:
  • Programming capabilities with a mathematical programming language, such as Matlab or Excel
  • Ability to interact with and contribute to cross-functional teams (team player)
  • Takes the initiative to drive projects forward
  • Ability to handle multiple projects or tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to follow standard company processes as well as to develop new
  • Drive to deliver products on time with attention to quality
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Excellent quantitative skills
