Primary Function of Position:

The Ion™ endoluminal system is Intuitive's robotic platform for the diagnosis and treatment of life limiting lung conditions. We are seeking a Sr. Manager of Mechanical Engineering to lead teams responsible for Ion’s robotic system design. This role is an exciting opportunity to join a rapidly growing new business within Intuitive and contribute meaningfully to its future growth.

The position has responsibility both for the current design in production as well as development of future products, and involves managing managers as well as engineers. A successful candidate must excel in a focused, high energy, collaborative work environment, challenged to make sound decisions when faced with the time pressures and ambiguous or incomplete information typical of research and development.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Lead and influence cross-functional project teams in the design and development of products with complex robotic and clinical functionality
  • Recognize and attract top talent and invest in mentorship and training to retain and support the career development of team members
  • Provide vision for the hardware engineering team and foster an environment that encourages creativity, collaboration, and crisp execution
  • Define a product roadmap that supports the business and balances short term needs with long term objectives, through a deep understanding of customer needs and technical tradeoffs.
  • Navigate complex technical and programmatic situations by driving timely decision making and setting appropriate priorities to focus the team for success
  • Establish group objectives and individual work goals consistent with overall business goals
  • Champion best practices for mechanical design and continually refine processes and tools to maximize team efficiency and product stability
  • Provide administrative leadership and control for planning, staffing, budgeting, and project/program cost tracking
  • Document and communicate intellectual property

 

Skills, Experience, Education, & Training:

  • Minimum BS or higher in Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum 10 years of experience designing commercial mechanical products, or relevant graduate education
  • Minimum 3 years as a people manager, with proven ability to build strong engineering teams
  • Proficient in all phases of the product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debug, verification, and transfer to manufacturing. Experience in medical device or other regulated industry is preferred.
  • Strong analysis skills with knowledge of CAD and simulation tools that support design excellence
  • Detailed knowledge of and experience working with complex robotic components and devices, including sensors, motors, drivetrains, and integrated electronics subsystems
  • Strong people management skills with the ability to deliver results while supporting the career development goals of team members
  • Strong project management, planning, budgeting, and change management skills
  • Excellent communication (written, verbal), presentation, and documentation skills
  • A passion for creating robust/reliable products and an excitement to learn and problem solve
  • Ability to travel up to 10% time.
