We are seeking to fill a Senior Hardware Design Engineer, Power Electronics position located in Radford, VA. This role is well suited for a person with good leadership and mentorship skills who is interested in working in a hands-on and team-oriented environment.

In this role, the candidate will participate in the overall system design of a product as well as the detailed design, modelling, lab testing and regulatory approval of complex power electronic circuits to be used in motor drives. Duties include specification, circuit design, circuit simulation, schematic design and support of PCB layout and mechanical designs. Duties also include providing leadership to other team members and supporting personnel. The candidate will support new product development, help to sustain existing designs, help regulatory testing, and assist production with quality issues.

A qualified candidate should have strong problem-solving abilities. Interest and willingness to work and contribute within a collaborative team is a must.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Mentor and lead other design engineers
  • Specify, design and model complex power electronics used in motor drives
  • Create schematics, part lists, test specifications, and technical documentation
  • Oversee and lead PCB Layout and Mechanical designs
  • Collaborate with other design engineers, compliance engineers and embedded software teams on validation and verification testing of system, circuits, functional tests, assemblies, and software
  • Participate in system integration between power electronics, digital electronics, and embedded software
  • Collaborate with the compliance engineering team to support product certifications (UL, CE, TUV, RoHS, REACH etc.)
  • Specify usage of components and motor drive accessories
  • Support customers, applications engineering, documentation, and quality teams
  • Lead activities to ensure sustainability of existing production products

Job Requirements

Critical Competencies

Required:
  • Strong mentoring, coaching and leadership skills
  • Ability to supervise CAD resources to layout PC boards
  • Knowledge of switching power supplies including custom magnetics design
  • Strong mathematical skills to do thorough theoretical analysis
  • Ability to work in the lab with high power electronics and rotating machinery to validate operation and use lab instrumentation such as oscilloscopes
  • Knowledge of circuit simulation (e.g., SPICE) to validate designs
  • Understanding of engineering documents (Schematics, Component Data Sheets, PCB Layout, and product specifications)
  • Proficient in Windows Operating Systems and Microsoft Office Tools
  • Proficient with the use of oscilloscopes, and digital multi-meters
  • Listening: Practices attentive and active listening; has patience to hear people out
  • Motivating others: Creates a climate in which people want to do their best; invites input from others and shares ownership and visibility with and motivate many kinds of direct reports and team or project members

Preferred:
  • General motion knowledge (e.g. motion trajectories, kinematics, motors, drives, field buses, PLC, PLCopen, IO) is highly valuable
  • General analog hardware design skills is highly valuable
  • Knowledge of servo control algorithms and motor control algorithms
  • Familiarity with:
    • Requirements for Conflict Materials, RoHS, REACH and SCIP Database
    • UL, CE, CSA, TUV and other agency certifications
    • Lifecycle analysis tools (e.g. Silicon Expert)
    • Engineering Change Documentation (ECOs, Deviations)
    • MRP system (e.g. Oracle)
    • Solder rework
Education and Experience Requirements
  • BSEE / MSEE or similar degree required
  • 7+ years related experience required
  • 10+ years' related experience preferred
  • Comprehensive knowledge in 100-100kW system design
  • Experience in design, test, and validation of 3-phase power stages from a few amps at 24V dc input up to 200 Arms peak with 480 Vac input to even 500 Arms with 36Vdc. Power transistor/module, current sensor design/selection, ac rectifier and bus capacitor, high power connector selection, gate drive design, power supply component selection, magnetics selection or design, EMI filters
  • Experience in implementing control algorithms for switching power supplies
