Chaminade College Preparatory seeks a dynamic, innovative, and engaging SPEECH AND DEBATE COACH AND MODERATOR. This is a part-time position.

The successful candidate will possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to lead the middle school's Speech and Debate program, providing instructional and supervisory leadership as the speech and debate coach. The coach/moderator will create a highly competitive speech and debate team and select speech participants for forensic and debate tournaments.

The coach/moderator will develop a competitive speech team from a large group of students of diverse backgrounds.

Calendar: December through May

Hours Per Week: 7-­10 hours per week for practices during class block X Block and after school, not counting meets, which occur outside of these hours.

Key Responsibilities

• Stays informed on rules, procedures and judging standards for forensic events (NSDA - National Speech and Debate Association).
• Obtains necessary permission, insurance and school participation forms and fees from students.
• Sets practice/behavior standards required for students to enter tournaments.
• Meets with students on a regular basis (minimum of two or three times per week during school year).
• Books tournament arrangements, including transportation.
• Coordinates student and judge entry, and supervises and judges at weekend and evening tournaments. Trains parent and alumni volunteer judges.
• Records NSDA points and develops protocols to recognize participation and achievement.
• Teaches theories and skills underlying the various competition events and debate Parliamentary 3 x 3 format.
• Facilitates acquisition of literary material and research information for speeches, database access and NSDA membership.
• Reads students' speeches, debate cases, and literary pieces to assess for coherent and convincing performances.
• Conducts practices and drills to reinforce and assess skill development.
• Reviews judge evaluations and motivates students to continually improve.
• Utilize Tabroom.com for scoring and registration.
• Golden State Debate League member.

Qualifications

• Prior experience leading a Speech and Debate program desired.
• Prior experience working with students in a Catholic school environment desired.

Salary and Benefits

This is an hourly part-time position. The salary for this position will be commensurate with experience. This position is not eligible for the Chaminade's employee benefits package.
