A.T. Still University's School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona (ATSU-SOMA) invites applications for a part-time, exempt Clinical Medicine Instructor on the Mesa, Arizona campus. This position reports to the Chair, Department of Clinical Science Medicine. Faculty will contribute to ATSU-SOMA in the areas of educating students in years 1-4, scholarly activity, diversity, equity and inclusion, and service to the University and community.
In the health sciences, certain basic knowledge and skills in the disciplines are mastered at levels of clinical practice below the masters and doctoral level degrees conferred by the university. When this knowledge and skill comprises part of the necessary curriculum for ATSU Masters and Doctoral Degrees, persons with expertise in a specific area may be engaged in limited instruction. Such persons must meet ATSU requirements for tested experience that include at minimum: certification or licensure in specific specialized areas accompanied by at least 10 years of clinical experience in the practice of their specialized area.
Examples include registered and licensed dental hygienists, licensed physician assistants, registered respiratory and ultrasound therapists. Instruction by such individuals is limited to knowledge and skills in those clinical treatment areas permitted by their certification or license and within their area of expertise based on their practice experience. Each college/school describes the specifics of tested experience unique to their areas.
Subsequent to the development of the above policy, new instructors hired based on “tested experience” are subject to the following limitations:
Persons not possessing the terminal degree being awarded by the program may be hired as Instructors only. They are not placed in, nor can they progress through, the traditional professorial ranks of assistant, associate and full professor. Their instruction is limited to those actions permitted by their license and contained within their area of expertise based on practice experience. Instructors hired based on tested experience, rather than degree qualifications, may instruct in lecture, small group, skills, clinical and laboratory courses but may not be designated as the Instructor of Record (Course Director) for any course in the curriculum, nor issue final (summative) course grades.
