About the Position:

SMU Libraries seeks an Archivist to catalog, interpret, and preserve archival and associated visual and performing arts materials, including works of art on paper in Bywaters Special Collections and the G. William Jones Film Collection. Provides curriculum support for SMU students and faculty and research assistance to the community. Promotes awareness of the collection with creative outreach and marketing activities, including contributions to exhibits and programs. Assists with digitization projects and digital asset preservation in coordination with the Norwick Center for Digital Solutions.

Essential Functions:

  • Process archival collections, coordinate preservation, create EAD-encoded finding aids, contribute to digitization projects. Processing of paper-based collections of the G. William Jones Film & Video Collection.
  • Provide research assistance to the SMU academic community and outside researchers by responding to requests for access to collections, reproductions, museum loans, and including general inquiries from donors.
  • Maximize student and faculty engagement with holdings by creating and delivering instructional sessions using special collections resources.
  • Promote awareness of holdings through outreach activities such as blog posts, exhibitions, and by building collegial relationships within the museum, library, and archival community.
  • Collaborate with special collections and archives staff across the SMU Libraries.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's in Library Science
  • 1 year library experience
  • Knowledge of archival procedures and policies, especially registration, conservation and preservation practices, assessment.
  • Familiarity with archival procedures and policies, especially metadata standards.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative, positive, and effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, the public, and donors is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Degree in humanities, visual/performing arts.
  • 3 years' experience in library, museum, or historical institution.
  • Background/experience in American history, art and culture, with an emphasis on the Southwest
  • Expertise in issues of handling, storage, and preservation of both works of art on paper and archival collections.
  • Working knowledge of copyright issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with collection management systems.
  • Expertise or familiarity with curation of online and physical exhibitions.
