Position Overview

We are currently seeking a senior metallographer to join our team at Novelis Global Research and Technology Center (NGRTC) in Kennesaw, Georgia. The incumbent will be part of the Metallography lab team that processes material for microstructural investigations used in alloy development as well as defect analysis for plant and customer support.

The Senior Technologist will also have the role of lab responsible for the optical microscopy laboratory which includes ensuring compliance with our ISO 17025 quality program, optical imaging and analysis, training, record keeping, test scheduling, LIMS organization, maintenance and scheduling of calibrations.
Responsibilities & Qualifications

Responsibilities:

  • Carry out metallography task requests from project leaders as assigned by the lab responsible.
  • Train new and current users of the laboratory in all aspects of metallographic specimen preparation methods.
  • Lead the capability development of the metallography lab by staying current on the latest equipment and techniques.
  • Assume the role of lab responsible for the optical microscopy lab which includes maintaining ISO 17025 compliance, 5S organization, record keeping, training, test scheduling, LIMS organization and annual calibrations.
  • Conduct microscopic investigations on samples of aluminum alloys as well as other metal systems for purposes of metallurgical assessment as well as defect analysis.
  • Perform all necessary optical microscopy duties as needed to complete task requests assigned to the lab from our laboratory information management system.
  • Maintains awareness of latest technologies relevant to metallography and optical microscopy and converts this into innovation that works.
  • Demonstrates personal commitment to safety and good EHS awareness by following established safety rules and practices during all activities. Ensure all user and visitors are compliant with all Safety Absolutes and other EHS initiatives.
  • Ensure Standard Operating Procedures and Quality System protocols are current, maintained, and applied with an emphasis on good laboratory practices, including implementation and maintenance of our 5S program, ISO 17025 and LIMS compliance.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the KPI's for a work area or project, and the link to the significance to the business.

Qualifications
  • Entry to this level typically requires 5-10 years of progressive experience and a BS in metallurgy, metallurgical engineering or equivalent and advanced metallography experience.
  • Hands on laboratory experience working in a metallography and optical microscopy lab. Aluminum metallographic specimen preparation experience is required.
  • Expertise in sectioning, mounting and polishing of aluminum and its alloys.
  • Proficient in the etching of aluminum alloys for optical microscopy.
  • Knowledge of optical microscopy, image capture, grain size analysis.
  • Familiarity with the following equipment is favorable; Zeiss bright field, dark field and polarized light microscopy. Keyence VHX digital microscopes; lens changes, stitching, depth compositions Keyence VR3200; basic topography and profilometry. Leica stereo microscopes
  • Analytical Methods including Area-Threshold (phase-particle) analysis, grain size measurements (ASTM E112 intersection), basic micrograph distance measurements through ImageJ.
  • Knowledge of ImageJ, Photoshop, IMS IMagic and Keyence software packages is advantageous.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities across multiple projects or work streams.
  • Ability to independently isolate a problem and draw upon knowledge and experience to design appropriate possible solutions.
  • Considers multiple aspects in problem solving including economics, maintenance, and technical issues in area of responsibility
  • The ability to acquire new knowledge, capability and skills in metallography and optical microscopy and the desire and ability to collaborate and communicate across functions are essential to this position.
