Job Summary

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Creates and edits full-level CONSER authenticated serial bibliographic records in Slavic and related languages.
  • Creates and edits full-level bibliographic records for print and electronic resources contributed to the OCLC WorldCat international catalog.
  • Creates and edits authority records for the Name Authority Component (NACO) of the Program for the Cooperative Cataloging (PCC).
General Responsibilities
  • Catalogs based on current structure and information. Catalogs material using bibliographic records; updates and maintains catalogs and databases.
  • Creates original cataloging where no source record exists using derivative cataloging.
  • Revises cataloging as needed and edits authority records.
  • Collects and collates data, compiles statistics, and uses compiled information to prepare unit reports.
  • May assist faculty, students, and other patrons by answering phones and handling library-related issues, as well as resolving non-routine problems related to library activities.
  • May oversee library department desk and provide training and direction for students employees working the front desk.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • High school diploma or GED
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years of library experience
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS

Required
  • Proficient communication skills
  • Proficient reading knowledge of at least one Slavic language in Cyrillic script
  • Maintains a high degree of professionalism
  • Demonstrates time management and priority setting skills
  • Demonstrates a high commitment to quality
  • Possesses flexibility to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment
  • Highly thorough and dependable
  • Experience with information systems and web-based applications, such as databases, online search and discovery tools, and cataloging/metadata applications
  • Understanding of the common security protocols related to Internet use and protecting the information privacy of library users
  • Ability to research and synthesize information into actionable information for library colleagues and users
Preferred
  • Reading knowledge of language(s) in addition to English and Slavic languages.
  • Knowledge of cataloging concepts and procedures including RDA, MARC, CONSER, and NACO.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Additional Information

After the probationary period, this position is eligible to a flexible work schedule subject to departmental needs.
