GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Senior Research Technologist will perform independent and efficient work supporting the laboratory's research endeavors and assists Principal Investigators in the research laboratory. Performs independently or assists in experiments under minimum supervision of the Principal Investigators. This includes the accurate and detailed recording of experimental procedures and results, analyzing and presenting obtained data, maintenance of the laboratory databases, ordering necessary reagents to conduct experiments and participating in general upkeep of the laboratory.

This position requires flexibility in their time schedule dictated by the parameters of specific experiments.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position requires that the individual be highly organized, self-motivated and able to strictly follow instructions and work independently and efficiently.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

Operations

-Maintain equipment, inventory and protocols, purchasing, and related inquiries. -Coordinate lab schedules and resolve technical problems.

Establish and maintain tissue and cell banks and databases

-Provides instruction to new staff in various laboratory techniques, including common molecular biology skills such as cell culture ELISA, FACS vector design and construction, PCR, DNA cloning protein analysis and protein production / purification and storage.

-Supervise the activity of laboratory technicians and assist post-doctoral fellows with new techniques and protocols.

-Develop and implement laboratory(s) policies and procedures in conjunction with the PI. Writes and updates laboratory protocols and safety guidelines. Coordinate the production of MAPS, Standard Operating Procedures.

-Frequently interacts with other labs and coordinates the program activities with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and employees.

-Monitor compliance with good animal laboratory practice in accordance with IACUC requirements .

-Advises on technical procedures, techniques and equipment, and maintain conformance with specific operational standards.

-Installs and maintains laboratory equipment in compliance with federal regulations. Develops and implements quality assurance programs relating to calibration and maintenance of equipment.

-Oversees chemical safety and biosafety training and records for the lab.

-Monitors all lab personnel for adherence to NRC guidelines and MGH safety standards.

-Assists in the MTA process, following through on material requested in or out of the laboratory.

-Assist the PI and Grant Manager with expense monitoring.

Bench

-Establish and maintain tissue and cell banks using strict sterile cell culture techniques to keep the cells free from contamination by microorganisms and cell line cross-contamination and real time update cell databases

- Manage the lab tokeep an effective system of people and technologyrunning smoothly.

-Maintain records on cell lines, vectors, DNA sequences, ascites and antibodies

-Conducts experiments and performs routine and technically advanced assays as needed.

-Performs monoclonal antibody and protein purification for projects and laboratory. ---

-Completes all stages of preps from growth to purification and characterization of material.

-Participates in the development and investigation of new procedures, assays, and/or instrumentation.

-Performs specialized experiments with a high level of independence.

-Contributes to improvements in experimental protocols and techniques. Creates new protocols as needed.

-Participates in the preparation of data and text for presentation and publication

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

Must have proficiency in laboratory methods of molecular biology or immunology, and experience with antibody characterization and development preferred. Animal skills for tumor implantation, treatment, tumor measurement and imaging.

Aptitude and technical problem solving; attention to detail; excellent oral and written skills; organizational skills to formulate and complete time tables; excellent work habits and adaptability changing work environment; proficient in Office and database software.

Qualifications
EDUCATION:

B.S or B.A required in Immunology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related field. Advanced degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of 5 years of progressively more responsible experience in a research field required.
