Princeton University

Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) is looking to hire multiple full-time pre-doctoral research assistants (Senior Research Specialists). The positions entail close collaboration with professors Allan Hsiao, Micaela Sviatschi, and Thomas Fujiwara on research projects related to development economics, political economy, and environmental economics (e.g., crime, climate change, elections, and gender disparities).

The positions involve a variety of tasks that provide excellent preparation for graduate school, such as managing data sets, statistical analysis, design and implementation of surveys, summarizing research findings, and editing research papers. The opportunity to actively participate in fieldwork in a developing country context is also a possibility (though not required) for the position. In addition to working closely with faculty, senior research specialists participate in the vibrant academic life of Princeton University, including taking graduate or undergraduate courses, attending seminars, and engaging with graduate students and other research assistants. We pay a competitive salary and provide standard benefits such as health insurance. Princeton University can sponsor visas for foreigner applicants. This position is ideal for seniors graduating by Summer 2022 or final year master’s students with a strong interest in pursuing a Ph.D. in Economics after acquiring one or two years of research experience. This is a one-year position with the possibility of renewal for a second year. End date is contingent on the start date, which may vary. The positions are based at Princeton University’s campus on Princeton, NJ, though some RAs live in the metropolitan area and work remotely for part of the week. Covid-19 vaccinations are required to work at Princeton University.

  • Minimum BA/BS degree in Economics, Mathematics, or Computer Science (or significant coursework in Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, and/or programming).
  • Excellent research, writing, and programming skills. Knowledge of Stata and LaTeX is particularly helpful. Knowledge of R, SQL, ArcGIS, Matlab, Python, and/or Julia is a plus, but not necessary.
  • Knowledge of Spanish, Portuguese, and/or Indonesian is a plus, but not necessary.
  • Candidates should provide:
  • A current CV.
    • Cover letter indicating:
    • Interest in the position.
    • Any prior research experience.
    • Your programming language experience.
    • Names and email addresses of 2-3 references.
    • GPA and/or summary of academic performance.
    • When you are available to begin work.
Applications will be reviewed as they are received. Short-listed applicants will be asked for further information and complete a technical exercise. This ad will be removed when all positions are filled. We at the School of Public and International Affairs believe that it is vital to cultivate an environment that embraces and promotes diversity, equity and inclusion - fundamental to the success of our education and research mission. This commitment to diversity informs our efforts in recruitment and hiring as we actively seek colleagues of exceptional ability who represent a broad range of viewpoints, experiences and value systems, and who share Princeton University's dedication to excellence.
