Senior Manager, Media Relations & External Communications

Responsibilities:

Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc., (Otsuka) is seeking a strategic public/media relations professional to join its high-performance External Communications team within Otsuka's Corporate Communications Department. The successful candidate will cultivate positive relationships with journalists, strengthen Otsuka's brand engagement and live into our purpose to defy limitation so that others can too.

The successful candidate will strategically deliver positive outcomes on corporate, brand, and pipeline initiatives, strengthen media coverage.

Our External Communications professionals work collaboratively with executives, business stakeholders, alliances, the media and key influencers to increase Otsuka brand awareness, differentiate our company and products in the industry, position our executives as thought leaders and protect our corporate image and reputation.

Responsibilities include:

MEDIA RELATIONS


  • Build relationships with and engage top-tier media and relevant key journalists on corporate, brand, and pipeline pillars to identify placement opportunities for Otsuka.

  • Proven track record in securing diversified, high-level media placements, as well as the ability to see industry trends and craft insights into effective media relations pitches a must for this position.

  • Execute media tactics to generate visibility and support Otsuka's thought leadership program and industry events.

  • Develop strategy that includes reporter and influencer research, pitch development and outreach, management of media preparation for executive interviews, and reporting and analytics related to media trends and coverage.

  • Work with Director, External Communications to manage incoming media requests, when needed.

  • Lead enterprise media monitoring, distill data sets to identify trends in the environment, industry or amongst competitors; interpret data to derive meaningful insights and continuously share learnings with team.

  • Share media relations best practices with US regional comms team; advise on local media engagements as needed.

  • Partner with the Government Affairs and Advocacy and Patient and Stakeholder Management cross-functional partners to develop communications programs that complement, not duplicate, efforts.

  • Partner with social media team to approach top-tier global media relationships and syndicate social media content.

  • Develop comprehensive media briefing packets for C-Suite level executives ahead of media interviews.

  • Demonstrate strong media acumen when engaging with reporters.

  • Develop and foster collaborative relationships with cross-functional business partners to stay informed of new initiatives and projects to enable optimal content creation and delivery of key messages.

  • Develop robust plans that integrate digital and social media components and engage audiences across traditional and new media.

  • Amplify speaking engagements for thought leaders at industry conferences and Otsuka-managed events; end-to-end management of some events may be required.

  • Monitor, analyze and communicate PR results on a quarterly basis. Demonstrate an increase in public awareness of the organization and/or products.

GENERAL

  • Manage workload in a fast-paced and sometimes ambiguous environment, a must.

  • Create and manage a multi-faceted external communications plan that aligns with corporate objectives. Have a firm command of the PESO model to coordinate appropriate PR activities and execute across multiple commercial brands and R&D business through product life-cycles and/or corporate narrative.

  • Use excellent writing skills to research and draft a wide variety of materials including business plans, key messages, press releases, keynote presentations, Q&As, backgrounders, infographics, videos, etc., with the extended Corporate Communications team.

  • Build relationships with thought leaders, advocacy groups and local/national organizations as needed to grow industry awareness.

  • Liaise with PR agencies including managing relationship, work efficiency, budget, and project management.

  • Maintain a keen understanding of industry trends affecting the pharmaceutical and digital industry and make appropriate recommendations.

  • Collaborate closely with Corporate Communications teammates to ensure appropriate pull-through across various internal and external channels.

Travel (approximately 15-25%)

Qualifications:
Required:

  • BA/MA degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing Communications or a related discipline

  • 7 - 15 years of experience in a public relations agency or corporate communications environment

  • Proven working experience in public relations, preferably pharmaceutical, mental health, nephrology, and/or tech industry

  • Strong relationships with both local and national business and industry media outlets, preferred

  • Excellent computer and detail-oriented skills

  • Excellent project management skills

  • Excellent budget management skills

Preferred:

  • Pharmaceutical company experience

  • Prior PR agency experience

  • PR and/or Journalism background

  • Solid knowledge of social media including blogs, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.
