SUMMARY

The Senior Epidemiologist will focus on providing high level expertise in designing, planning and initiating epidemiologic studies, surveys and investigations for COVID-19 and other infectious disease threats under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Division of Preparedness and Emerging Infections (DPEI). The candidate will also be responsible for developing and applying analytic methodologies and principles, leading the application of analytic techniques, and enhancing investigation, surveillance and reporting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Evaluates data collection, quality control, and data utilization methods used to study epidemiological problems and issues.

Provides data management, reporting and analysis support to improve effectiveness of surveillance, investigation and other epidemiologic practices using SPSS, R, SAS, and other statistical packages and tools (such as Excel, Tableau, and Python).

Ensures application of principles of informatics, including data collection, processing and analysis, in support of epidemiologic practice.

Evaluates analysis of data from an epidemiologic investigation or study.

Determines evidence-based interventions and control measures in response to epidemiologic findings.

Ensures preparation of written and oral reports and presentations that communicate necessary information to professional audiences, policy makers and the public.

Develops reports, reads heads, briefs, manuscripts, white papers, info papers, action memos, presentations, publications and packages. Disseminates findings by briefing leadership concisely.

Provides programming support in the development and maintenance of active projects.

Serves as an organizational subject matter expert on data related issues to assist users in meeting their needs.

Reviews project reports, findings, applications, data sets and models for anomalies to ensure accuracy.

Analyzes research findings and makes recommendations for future research needs.

Translates and presents complex analyses into action-oriented recommendations to clients and/or large groups.

Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to any training made available by the company.

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor's instruction in such a way as to maximize output.

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and Human Resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions as the best of own ability.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

Master's degree with a focus in epidemiology with four (4) or more years' work experience in epidemiology or equivalent degree; or Doctoral-level epidemiologist with at least two (2) years' work experience at a senior epidemiologist level; or other nonepidemiology professional degree or certification (e.g., RN, MD/DO, DDS/DMD, DVM, PhD, RS) with specific epidemiology training (e.g., MPH degree, CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service program) and at least four (4) years' work experience at a senior epidemiologist level. Proven experience in SPSS, SAS, and/or R. Familiarity with governmental agency policies, procedures, and culture is desirable.

CERTIFICATES / LICENSES / REGISTRATION

Must be able to obtain government security clearance

U.S. Citizens / Green Card only due to government or federal requirement

Knowledge of public health and social science approaches. Experience in communicable diseases, their transmission, prevention and control methods. Knowledge of the principles, practices and methods to plan and implement public health programs.

Knowledge of analytical and evaluative techniques.

Synthesize principles of good ethical/legal practice for related to study design, data collection and dissemination.

Proven application of Microsoft office suite (specifically Excel and PowerPoint).

Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.

Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.

Ability to respond effectively to changing events and competing priorities.

Ability to multi-task and re-prioritize to meet deadlines.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups and or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations such as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory and factor analysis.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

May work in an environment where there is a heavy traffic, construction, rugged terrain, and hazardous environmental conditions. May work in an environment with exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals or blood borne pathogens. May work near moving or mechanical parts with risk of electrical shock. May be required to wear safety and personal protective equipment.
