This unit has responsibility for the value chain from discovery through to late-stage development, enabling rapid acceleration of promising early-stage assets and life-cycle management programs.

As Senior Director for BioScience - Hematology R&D, you will be pivotal in channeling our scientific capabilities in the discovery and development of novel therapies for the treatment of haematological malignancies. You'll have the opportunity to make a difference in people's lives every day.

You will have a key leadership role and give strategic direction to the scientific projects, and you will work together with and align with R&D colleagues from other departments and research sites of AstraZeneca. Based on you scientific experience and leadership skill you will serve as a mentor a leader to members of the team and an advisor at senior management level. This role is based in Waltham, MA.

You will combine your proven skills of people and matrix leadership, strategy and scientific insight to create a culture that both empowers and support the teams, and enable AstraZeneca to successfully achieve our company goals. You will work closely together with your 'peer' Senior Director Haematology from other departments and research sites.

The main responsibilities of this role are the following:

  • Be accountable for the teams performance and results with respect to the departmental goals and the delivery of key business objectives.
  • Participate in the scientific review of internal and external discovery proposals, collaboration and licensing opportunities related to key areas of research and portfolio build.
  • Maintain a high degree of awareness of new approaches in the field of hematological oncology drug discovery and development and foster its application in the organization.
  • Create a working environment that promotes scientific excellence and encourage the implementation of new approaches and technologies.
  • Build strong networks with peer senior leaders within AstraZeneca and with external experts to create a vibrant research environment, share best practices and leverage opportunities.
  • Maintain an atmosphere of trust and transparency within the team. Manage and coach the teams to facilitate professional growth and excellence.
  • Be a strong and visionary internal and external communicator and presenter.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Advanced degree, PhD and/or MD PhD, with 10 years post-doctoral experience in the oncology/hematology field
  • Minimum of 5 years of drug discovery experience in pharmaceutical industry with a track record of delivering candidates drugs in in the area of oncology, preferentially hematology
  • Extensive experience in basic and translational research either in academia or the pharmaceutical industry of target identification and validation.
  • Project and portfolio management experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with clear understanding of the balance of innovation, smart risks, and project delivery
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to multi-task project work
