We'll be looking to you to lead litigation for the EMEA, CIS, and APAC regions, working closely and coordinating with various business leaders and units to manage litigation, government investigations, and regulatory enforcement proceedings for Western Union in those regions. S/he is tasked with formulating and executing litigation strategy, minimizing legal exposure, coordinating investigations, and interacting with regulatory organizations across multiple diverse jurisdictions.

Interact regularly with the Deputy General Counsels, General Counsel, and other senior executives. You will provide strategic advice on issues such as the litigation risks of possible business decisions and the appropriate strategy to defend or resolve legal disputes, litigation, government investigations, or other claims. As global subpoena head, s/he devises and implements global subpoena fulfillment strategy and manages a team of ~20 people who fulfill ~30,000 subpoenas per year from over 100 countries. Responsible for developing high-performing talent within the subpoena team; enabling and rewarding continuous process improvements and innovative thinking; and strategic resource allocation with an enterprise mindset.

Your responsibilities will include

Manage litigation, government investigations, and regulatory enforcement proceedings, including formulating objectives and case strategy. Select and manage outside counsel; review and revise pleadings, discovery, etc.; update critical stakeholders and executives on case status; execute any lessons learned to improve the corporate process.

Act as global head of subpoenas. Devise and implement global subpoena strategy-lead subpoena team to drive efficiencies and invocation and develop talent. Advise and direct responses to escalated subpoenas, court orders, and similar mandatory requests for information. Work with Compliance and other departments to manage constant staffing, regulatory, and resource shifts in the subpoena world.

Advise on litigation risks of possible business decisions. Work cross-functionally with partners in different business units to enhance company policies and procedures, manage and reduce risk, and improve customer experience.

For such a pivotal role, you'll ideally have

  • Typically has 8+ years of practicing experience in a law firm or corporate legal department, with demonstrated legal expertise in litigation involving regulated industries. Experience in white-collar, regulatory investigations, government prosecution, consumer protection, and anti-money laundering/terrorist financing law is strongly preferred.
  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited school of law and active state bar membership
  • Ability to understand and manage legal issues across multiple jurisdictions
  • History of proactive and effective business counseling, issue spotting, problem-solving, negotiation, and analytical skills represent WU on diverse issues and projects.
  • Accurately identifies and assesses risks for complex or a broad spectrum of matters for a specific practice area or business unit.
  • Demonstrated handling of complex projects, often in a lead role
  • Deals directly with and have the confidence and trust of mid and senior-level business partners.
  • Extensive proven experience in negotiating in diverse cultures and demonstrated client/management service and decision-making skills.
  • Experience working with international companies and high customer orientation.
  • Ability to work independently, make practical, timely, solution-oriented decisions and advice, work on multiple projects with limited management oversight, demonstrating strong self-motivation.
  • Effective and persuasive oral and written communication skills tailored for the client.
  • Previous experience of lean and agile working methodologies is also desirable
  • Experience working for a global organization

Overall, on-target earnings $317,250 -$360,000. This amount includes base salary $176,250. - $200,000 and both short-term (30% of base pay) and long-term (50% of base pay) incentives. The overall earnings represent the anticipated low and high end of the Western Union compensation range for this position. Actual compensation will vary and will be based on several factors, such as candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role.
