Further enhancement of the Elsevier CyberSec team has created the need for a talented Security Engineer. Reporting to the VP CyberSec Engineering & Incident Response, the successful candidate will be focused on security software and automation engineering focused on the delivery technology solutions within Elsevier's computing environment to help ensure the protection of Elsevier's enterprise and customer facing products and services.

Role Purpose:

The Security Engineer will instrument and orchestrate security cloud automation, develop and deploy security technology and automate security response and security incident detection solutions. You will also be responsible for system development lifecycles of existing tooling. The successful candidate will sustain and innovate current technologies and develop solutions for improving the detection and response capability.

Technical Skills and Experience required:

  • 3+ years of IT security experience
  • BS Engineering/Computer Science or equivalent experience required
  • Foundational knowledge of cyber security concepts and functions.
  • Foundational software development knowledge and ability to work with programing and automation frameworks.
  • Understanding of application and system security testing and hardening.
  • Ability to analyze and monitor security systems for threats.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Installation/operation/troubleshooting of computing platforms in cloud-based environments.
  • Foundational understanding orchestration and infrastructure management automation.
  • Foundational knowledge of IT network concepts and processes.
  • Basic oral and written communication skills.


Key Accountabilities:
  • Understand and identify and analyze security events for anomalous activity develop techniques to safeguard company information assets against current and foreseeable threats.
  • Support security functions in cloud-based and enterprise back-office environments.
  • Software and technology solution engineering experience working with web and/or cloud-based environments
  • Familiarization with IT / Operational Risk management workflows, ticket management and event management tools
  • Experience with Agile and DevOps frameworks
  • Advanced knowledge of scripting and application development utilizing Java, Node JS, Javascript, Python and other common languages
  • Comfortable with system orchestration and cloud-based system deployment and management automation and monitoring
  • Develop and acquire intelligence to Identify threats and acquire product risk intelligence across all product offerings
  • Evaluate, tune and monitor telemetry to identify risks, misuse, fraud and theft of services.
  • Analyze chronic abnormal usage and attack patterns
  • Understand and assist with developing metrics demonstrating efficacy of security controls and attack countermeasures
  • Assist with reviewing existing tools, applications, and processes to help strengthen and optimize current capabilities, as well as identifying any gaps or technical solutions to further enhance the team's effectiveness
  • Perform, document, and investigate security operating defects, bugs or incidents as directed by senior-level colleagues.
  • Escalate and resolve security system failures, bugs and features as identified in monitoring tools and workflows.
  • Gather security metrics and prepare reports for applicable stakeholders.
  • Install and/or troubleshoot applications and other security solutions within cloud environments.
  • Remain current on industry standards for security in a technology environment.
