The Role:

The Infectious Disease Research group at Moderna is seeking a talented and motivated Scientist with experience in the fields of virology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and/or infection quantification assays. The Scientist will be part of teams responsible for advancing vaccine candidates from discovery through IND-enabling studies and clinical trials. The Scientist will identify vaccine targets and design studies to assess vaccine immunogenicity and efficacy in preclinical animal models. This work will include developing novel assays to evaluate efficacy, immune responses, host-pathogen interactions, and protein characterization of novel vaccine antigens. She/he/they will interface with collaborators and present results both internally and externally. The ability to effectively communicate across internal multi-disciplinary teams is paramount. Applicants should be outstanding scientists, collaborative team members, strong communicators, and excited to work with cutting-edge mRNA technology in the advancement of viral vaccines.

Here's What You'll Do:

  • Assist in the identification of new targets for vaccine intervention and/or identification of novel approaches that utilize the mRNA platform in the development of new or better vaccines
  • Design in vivo studies to determine the antiviral activity elicited by various vaccine candidates
  • Run standard infection assays, including virus quantification and neutralization assays
  • Develop and conduct assays relevant for measuring responses to therapeutic mRNA vaccines in pre-clinical studies
  • Design and execute experiments to characterize antigens encoded by mRNA vaccine candidates
  • Maintain and qualify reagents, including relevant virus and cell stocks
  • Review literature for relevant approaches and for new technology with application to infectious disease research
  • Interpret and summarize experimental data
  • Present experimental results at group meetings, project meetings and department meetings
  • Manage multiple experiments, projects, and interactions with supporting functions simultaneously

Here's What You'll Bring to the Table:
  • Exceptional Ph.D. with expertise in virology and molecular biology (willing to consider MS with 6+ years directly related industry experience in lieu of PhD)
  • 1-2 years of either postdoctoral work/independent research experience in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry in addition to a PhD is a plus
  • Strong expertise in virology techniques such as viral culture, preparation and quantitation of viral stocks, infectivity assays, and neutralization assays
  • Skilled in cellular and molecular biology including tissue culture, transfections, transductions, and Western blotting (additional experience in flow cytometry and ELISAs is valued)
  • Experience with molecular virology techniques such as virus purification, gradient sedimentation, and pseudovirus production
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute new experimental approaches, manage data, and work independently
  • Ability to design and troubleshoot new assays independently
  • Desire to work in a cross-functional work environment
  • Excellent team spirit, communication, and presentation skills

Here's What We'll Bring to the Table:
  • On-site subsidized cafeteria or catered lunches
  • Company-provided iPhone
  • Free parking, monthly subway pass or a subsidized commuter rail pass
  • Free annual corporate membership to Bluebikes
  • Highly competitive healthcare coverage including: medical offered through BCBS (HMO/PPO), dental, and vision offered through VSP
  • Flexible Spending Accounts for medical expenses and dependent care expenses
  • 16 weeks of 100% paid parental leave for all new parents
  • 16 weeks 100% paid family caregiver leave
  • 20 weeks 100% paid medical leave
  • Eligible for "Moderna Month" (one month paid sabbatical after five years of service and eligible for additional one month paid sabbatical every 3 years thereafter)
  • Adoption assistance and discounts to local childcare centers, as well as access to care.com
  • 401k (traditional and Roth offered) with 50% match on first 6% deferred. Match is vested immediately
  • A suite of Moderna paid insurance coverage, including: life insurance, short-term and long-term disability
  • Voluntary legal assistance plan

About Moderna

In 10 years since its inception,Modernahas transformed from a science research-stage company advancing programs in the field of messenger RNA (mRNA), to an enterprise with a diverse clinical portfolio of vaccines and therapeutics across six modalities, a broad intellectual property portfolio in areas including mRNA and lipid nanoparticle formulation, and an integrated manufacturing plant that allows for both clinical and commercial production at scale and at unprecedented speed.Modernamaintains alliances with a broad range of domestic and overseas government and commercial collaborators, which has allowed for the pursuit of both groundbreaking science and rapid scaling of manufacturing. Most recently, Moderna's capabilities have come together to allow the authorized use of one of the earliest and most effective vaccines against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Moderna's mRNA platform builds on continuous advances in basic and applied mRNA science, delivery technology and manufacturing, and has allowed the development of therapeutics and vaccines for infectious diseases, immuno-oncology, rare diseases, cardiovascular diseases and auto-immune diseases.Modernahas been named a top biopharmaceutical employer bySciencefor the past seven years.
