Scientist (Cell Culture & Fermentation Sciences)

Introduction to the Group:

Join our Biopharmaceutical Development group, a multi-disciplinary scientific function providing expertise in Process/Analytical/Formulation/Device Development and Characterization. We are also responsible for transferring the processes to different commercial sites in and outside the AstraZeneca organization. Our Cell Culture and Fermentation Sciences Group is accountable for cell line development, process development, and process characterization. This group assists in the scale up and technical transfer of processes to different clinical and commercial sites and supports manufacturing deviations and regulatory submissions as needed.

Accountabilities:

As a Scientist in the Cell Culture & Fermentation Sciences group, you will work alongside a team of experienced bioprocess development scientists supporting projects across our portfolio. You will develop and optimize mammalian cell culture seed train and bioreactor processes, and implement state-of-the-art process technology, including process analytical technology (PAT). You will be responsible for performing shake flask and bioreactor runs as well as different analytical tests to characterize mammalian cells. You will also develop and improve cell culture media and nutrient feed. Your role will involve designing experiments and the statistical analysis of data. You will support technology transfers to clinical and commercial manufacturing sites including Contract Manufacturing Organizations (CMOs). Additionally, you will be responsible for authoring and reviewing development reports and contributing to regulatory filings such as IND and BLA. The position requires periodic weekend work for cell culture activities.

Education & Experience Requirements:

Education: BS or MS degree in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Biochemistry or related field

Experience: BS degree and 3+, MS degree and 1+ years of relevant industry experience

Essential Skills:

• Experience in cell culture and bioreactor operation
  
• Strong background in experimental design and data analysis
  
• Solid understanding of biochemical engineering concepts and biochemical pathways
  
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (or related) programs
  
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills including proven technical writing skills
  
• Capable of making independent decisions
  
• Ability to handle multiple projects and / or tasks concurrently in a fast-paced environment
  

Desirable Skills:

• Knowledge of design of experiment (DOE)
  
• Data analysis and visualization using statistical analysis software such as JMP
  
• Data analytics modeling, simulation, and prediction to improve process understanding
  
• Experience using ambr bioreactor or similar high throughput tools
  
• Experience and knowledge in multiple areas of focus (Robotics, Informatics, Machine Learning/AI, IT)
