Princeton University’s Office of the Dean for Research (DFR) is home to a vibrant communications operation that conveys information about Princeton's world-class research through the creation and distribution of news, feature articles, videos, social media and other outlets for a variety of audiences. Within DFR, the Princeton Innovation initiative supports research, innovation and entrepreneurship to translate discoveries and inventions into technologies and services that have a positive impact on society. This is a benefits eligible 5 year term position.

DFR is seeking a communications specialist to serve the growing need for high-quality research and innovation communications as well as marketing of content and opportunities. In this newly created position, the specialist will write and otherwise create content about research across the disciplines with a significant focus on the natural sciences and engineering. The specialist will also develop outreach mechanisms, including media outreach, newsletters, social media, website content, and marketing materials, to ensure that the information reaches intended audiences. The specialist will ensure that communications and marketing materials represent Princeton’s welcoming environment for groups historically underrepresented in academia and entrepreneurship. The position requires 50% time spent on research writing and content creation and 50% spent on innovation communications and marketing specifically related to a new National Science Foundation Innovation Corps (I-Corps) Northeast Hub that is being formed in collaboration with several universities in the region.Qualifications


  • Experience in science writing, science communications, science journalism or research communications.
  • Excellent skills in writing write news and feature articles about complex topics in journalistic style.
  • Highly skilled in writing marketing copy for events, newsletters, and advertisements.
  • Knowledge of how to use social media platforms for institutional communications.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and work independently.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and interact effectively with students, alumni, faculty, and administrators.
  • Sensitivity to the needs and concerns of students and faculty from diverse backgrounds.
  • Willingness to step in where needed and learn new skills; entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Attention to detail in every aspect of the work.
  • Ability or demonstrated interest in learning new software and adopting new capabilities; growing as the communications landscape grows. Areas of growth could include data visualization and videos.
