Scope of Job:
To provide professional academic advisement for current and prospective students and specialized academic advisement for at-risk students within the School of Medicine.

Description of Duties:
• Provides informative and collaborative academic advising for SOM students.
• Develops, implements, and evaluates initiatives that complement individual advising strategies to encourage student academic success.
• Teaches students strategies related to academic planning and monitoring, and academic success.
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge and disseminates information to students regarding University and SOM policies, curriculum offerings and degree completion requirements.
• Manages the planning, implementing, and evaluating interventions for at risk students.
• Enters data regarding academic advisement services.
• Collaborates with other staff to assess academic advising practices and materials, services and resources with the objective of improving the student experience.
• Develops, and coordinates presentations for orientations, trainings, university events and activities regarding academic advising, retention initiatives, mentoring and academic success for the School of Medicine.
• In collaboration with the co-module directors and clerkship directors, assists with exam reviews, coordinates advising /tutoring and identifies students needing additional support.
• Assists student to access academic advising resources.
• Assists with coordinating tutoring services for medical students.
• Provides personal counseling to students as relevant to their academic studies, and refers students for counseling to the Office of Student Affairs and Counseling and Wellness Office.
• Assists with the development of the Academic Advising Committee.
• Attends Promotion and Graduation (P&G) Committee meetings, provides relevant student performance information to Committee members, and counsels students appropriately.
• Participates and makes recommendations in the formation and management of the Student Success Program.
• Assists students in registering for major standardized exams as deemed appropriate by OSA (i.e. USMLE Step 1, Step 2CK, and Step 2CS).
• Participates in professional development programming, assessment, and mentoring opportunities that enhance skills and knowledge in academic advisement.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received:
General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given:
Direct supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.

Preferred Education:
Graduate coursework leading towards a Master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance, Clinical or Counseling Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work or related field from an accredited university.

Licenses/Certifications:
None.

Required Experience:
Three (3) years of experience in academic advising or related student service experience in a higher education setting.

Preferred Experience:
Advising experience in a medical school setting.

Equipment:
Use of standard office equipment.

Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to perform all required duties. Office Environment: some travel and weekend/evening work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office/ learning center environment across the Rio Grande Valley.

Other:
Ability to use computers for word processing, calendar sharing, emailing, accessing student academic information. Ability to successfully collaborate with faculty, administrators within higher education (i.e. college deans, department chairs, and other administrators, etc.) and professional staff. Strong written/verbal communication, collaboration and presentation skills. Ability to apply current university academic policies and procedures, current academic advisement practices, student academic monitoring and retention efforts. Ability to identify specific student needs and to refer students effectively to available resources. Able to read and interpret state guidelines.
