The Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring workplace safety, using thorough knowledge of all laws and regulations concerning construction and site safety. The main responsibilities are supporting and providing direction to both site employees and the Construction Manager on safety matters, taking the lead to identify and correct if required, any hazard assessments or provide safety training if lacking, hosting safety meetings with subcontractors and vendors that are on our Construction Sites. Safety officer needs to have an extensive background in the electrical field with a strong understanding of the electrical standards.

Essential Functions:

  • Eligible to gain access to DOD compounds
  • Eligible to obtain the OSHA 500 and 501
  • Provide safety support and leadership to all employees
  • Ability to travel (80% of duties)
  • This is a salary position which requires availability 24/7
  • Professionalism is required in all aspects of the job
  • Able to identify safety hazards and correct in a positive proactive manner
  • Provides safe working conditions for all workers, sub-trades and visitors on/around the site
  • Enforces all established safety regulations and safe work practices
  • Recommends disciplinary action when necessary to ensure compliance with the rules
  • Ensures that trade workers are oriented with the site and its safety regulations
  • Provides instructions to workers on safe work procedures (i.e. How to use personal protective equipment as appropriate, e.g. hard hats, vests, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety-toed boots or other items deemed necessary)
  • Provides educational training and seminars to all employees
  • Provides support and administrative assistance on safety-related compliance projects, safety oversight, and Accident Prevention Plan (APP)
  • Corrects physical conditions, which are liable to cause or have caused accidents
  • Undertakes the investigation of accidents, incidents or near misses to determine the underlying causes. Complete the necessary forms to document these incidents immediately
  • Conducts regular on-site hazard assessments. Identify hazards and unsafe work practices and provide recommendations on how to eliminate these issues
  • Works in cooperation with other project supervisory personnel to determine procedures for dealing with safety violations.
  • Provides weekly safety reports to the Safety Manager
  • Assists in performing compliance audits and implement follow-up corrective actions to ensure compliance with Occupational Health & Safety and Safety Policy.
  • Ensures daily and weekly safety meetings are preformed and documented for all site employees and subcontractors
  • Cooperates with the rest of the team in order to achieve common objectives.
  • Sets a good example, demonstrate a positive safety attitude and abide by the Safety Code of Ethics.
  • Reports any anticipated loss of work time to Management as soon as possible after an injury has occurred
  • Maintains and encourage good housekeeping on all job sites
  • Responsible for the daily administration of the Safety Program
  • Posts all Safety bulletins, Safety posters and Safety rules and regulations
  • Ensures that pertinent safety inspections/reports are submitted as required
  • Ensures that corrective action is taken whenever deficiencies are identified
  • Conducts in house safety training
  • Keeps up with current knowledge of safety literature, regulations and codes or practice
  • Reviews accident reports to stay informed and up to date on safety issues
  • Reviews and implement safety manual
  • Professionally interacts with colleagues, members of the public, clients, and business associates
  • Complies with all company policies and applicable laws
Education/Certifications:
  • Journeyman Electrician card holder, OSHA 30 hour, CPR, First Aid, occupational health or similar field (or equivalent experience) is required.
  • Certifications preferred: Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) or Certified Biological Safety Professional by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene, Board of Certified Safety Professionals or American Biological Safety Association.
Required Qualifications:
  • A minimum of six years of direct safety experience (three within the construction industry). Five years experience can be substituted in lieu of a degree.
  • Subject Matter Expert for Safety: must be knowledgeable of all laws and regulations concerning construction and site safety, including but not limited to OSHA, DOSH, ANSI, NFPA, EPA and Workers Compensation regulations.
  • Computer Skills: must understand and be able to work with MS Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook, and other miscellaneous software that may be contractually required
  • Communication: must be a good communicator with both writing and speaking skills and be able to effectively train others.

The employee is occasionally required to climb ladders or stairs; use hands to type, finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and get in and out of vehicles. The employee is frequently required, sometimes for extended periods, to walk, stand, or sit. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. The employee must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently. Visual acuity requirements include color vision, depth perception, close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus, all of which may be necessary to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment, determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work, prepare and analyze data and figures, investigate small parts or defects, and review materials for extensive time periods.

The employee will be subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions; hazards, such as moving mechanical parts, working on scaffolding and high places, etc.; atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system or skin; and narrow passageways and other areas that could cause claustrophobia. The work environment and worksites may include construction sites, job site trailers, offices, or other locations. Noise level is generally moderate to high. Work often requires work boots, safety goggles, and hard hat. Typical hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, however hours can fluctuate depending on project needs to include evenings, nights, and weekends. Travel to construction worksites and business meetings will be required. Travel will entail overnight stays with some including multiple nights away from home.
