Working under the direction of Pediatric Oncology Ambulatory Nurse Manager and with guidance from the Pediatric Oncology Clinical Social Worker and working on-site at the Pediatric Oncology Clinic, the Pediatric Oncology Resource Specialist is responsible for researching resources and collaborating with community programs to identify current sources of support for Mass General Pediatric Oncology patients and families. Will work directly with families to complete applications for grants and assistance offered by those organizations. Will educate families about community programs, eligibility and limitations of those resources. Will work in conjunction with the Clinical Social Worker in Pediatric Oncology, who will identify families in need and refer to the Resource Specialist for assistance. In addition to accessing specific pediatric oncology resources, the Resource Specialist will become knowledgeable about other community resources that would be relevant and needed by these families. This could include but are not limited to community programs that provide transportation, housing, food and fuel assistance. The Pediatric Oncology Resource Specialist will offer guidance and referrals for families in need of such support. Will develop and maintain a data base of current pediatric oncology resources available to families both locally and regionally and keep this current and updated to reflect changes that occur with these programs. Will document in the electronic medical record (EPIC) to reflect resources accessed on behalf of families and referrals made to community programs.

  • Researches resource options for families referred by the Pediatric Oncology Clinical Social Worker. Collaborates with the Clinical Social Worker to determine the availability of resources and to develop a plan of action with the family for pursuing assistance.


  • Works directly with families to complete applications for assistance as well as provide guidance to families about programs in which they need to apply directly.


  • Researches resource information specific to Pediatric Oncology and maintains a current listing of programs available to be accessed.


  • In collaboration with the Social Service Resource Center (CRC) develops knowledge about general community resources that would be pertinent to families regardless of diagnosis and refer Pediatric Oncology families as needed to those resources.


  • Attends weekly Pediatric Oncology Team Meetings to gain knowledge about the current patient population and identify with the Clinical Social Worker families that would benefit from assistance by the Pediatric Oncology Resource Specialist.


  • Attends monthly Psychosocial Care Meetings within Pediatric Oncology to review patients and families with complex psychosocial needs.


  • Participate in meetings with the Social Service Manager of the Community Resource Center to maintain and enhance knowledge about current community resources.


  • Attend trainings and informational sessions in the community that provide added knowledge and awareness about community resources relevant to the Pediatric Oncology patient population.


  • Document interventions in the patient's medical record/EPIC.


  • Other duties as assigned to enhance the psychosocial care provided to patients and families.


  • Qualifications
    Bachelor's Degree in Social Work or related field

    Bilingual Spanish speaker preferred
