Residential Service Worker
The Youth Emergency Shelter is seeking a Residential Service Worker (RSW) who is collaborative supporter and a member of the HEBCAC Operations Team with the objective to support the mission of “THE NEST”, a Youth Emergency Transitional Shelter. The RSW is responsible for monitoring activities of the residents of the shelter to ensure compliance with the program rules and expectations. RSW will assist the residents with all of their needs while establishing and maintaining a safe environment while there stay at the shelter.

The RSW will help the residents achieve success in transitioning to housing. This role will be required to maintain confidentiality, input data into the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) data system, and maintain the rules and structures to help keep the shelter operations operating smoothly. The work schedule for this position is an evening shift from 6:00pm-11:00pm. Successful candidates must have ability to cover various shifts, including weekends, holidays and on-call schedule. This position reports to the Assistant Program Director.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides consistent coverage for assigned shifts, working within the team and independently to complete all shift tasks.
  • Receives new client, completes intake paperwork, creates proper client files and orients new resident to “THE NEST” shelter & services and its policies.
  • Verifies clients' homelessness prior to becoming a resident at “THE NEST”.
  • Completes an inventory for each resident's belongings upon admission and discharge.
  • Implement shelter rules, policies and procedures in line with accreditation standards for the shelter policies and follows staff policies and procedures.
  • Performs general administrative functions such as, completing daily communication log, answering telephone lines, distribution of client mail, laundry, and locks for their lockers. Monitors client activities, the maintenance of safety and security through monitoring of the security system, connection of residents to outside case managers, advocates, and or other service providers.
  • Provides direct mealtime supervision to assure that residents are provided a balanced meal and that Breakfast/Dinner procedures are consistently followed.
  • Distribute hygiene, personal care items, food, and snacks to residents as appropriate
  • Monitors and supervises resident's onsite at the shelter and complete check-in roll call sheets.
  • Refer to roll call sheets and completes bed checks for every resident hour on an hour and document activities in shelter log sheet.
  • Promotes an atmosphere of care, respect, and support among guests, volunteers and staff in the spirit of shelter.
  • Coordinate bed assignments, smoke breaks, and other daily routines.
  • Provides appropriate information and referrals for those who need other resources.
  • Monitors the activities of residents to ensure the safety of residents, volunteers, interns, and staff.
  • Assures that Daily/Weekly/Monthly schedule of chores are completed by residents in a satisfactory and timely manner
  • Helps clients resolve any issues as they may arise while they stay at the shelter.
  • Provides crisis intervention as needed, including determining when it is necessary to involve other staff, administration or the authorities.
  • Maintains written and oral communication with the Assistant Director and/or Program Director of incidents and incident reports in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Assures that incident reports are completed within 24 hours of the incident or within 24 hours of when the RSW learns of the incident.
  • Meets regularly with supervisor and attends all staff meetings, trainings, and other meetings as required/directed by Assistant Director and/or Program Director
  • Other duties as may be assigned by Assistant Director and/or Program Director


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Associates or Bachelor's Degree in Human Services preferred.
  • Two years' experience working in Human Services working with one or more of the following: individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health related issues, substance abuse, domestic violence, HIV/AIDS related issues, and with those living in poverty preferred.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude, self-motivation, organization, and resourcefulness while maintaining a reputation through proven action of being team and client oriented and willing to assist where/when needed.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries with program participants, and to refer residents appropriately to outside resources
  • An understanding and respect for the confidentiality of residents.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to assess emergency situations and respond effectively.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and other applications as well as experience using and entering data into HMIS or other client databases.
  • Strong understanding of effective youth development and shelter care services.
  • Ability to identify priorities and multi-task.
  • Strong team building abilities.
  • Ability to organize oneself, one's work, and other persons sufficiently to accomplish the required daily task.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Experience working with individuals who have health related issues, substance abuse, domestic violence, HIV/AIDS related issues, and with those living in poverty preferred.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
