ISAS is seeking a Research Zooarchaeologist to conduct archaeological field investigations and zooarchaeological studies based at the American Bottom Field Station, in Collinsville, Illinois including analyses of non-human animal remains encountered during ISAS projects in conjunction with state and federal laws and regulations.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct general and specialized studies of molluscan and terrestrial animal remains from archaeological sites.
  • Conduct and supervise ISAS archaeological field projects. Sporadic in-state travel to and from field projects for the purpose of participating in and/or conducting fieldwork.
  • Author analytical chapters and edit volumes/reports detailing archaeological sites and projects.
  • Interpret and synthesize field notes and data.
  • Coordinate and communicate with teams of researchers and analysts to complete archaeological field investigations, reports, and publications.

Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in anthropology, archaeology, or closely related field. Minimum of one to three years' experience with all phases of laboratory or field investigations in the Midwest, Southeast, or Eastern Woodlands of the United States. Demonstrated ability to conduct studies and develop inferences of the social, ecological, and cultural interrelationships between human beings and non-human animal populations. A demonstrated writing record and proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and graphic software. Knowledge of the archaeological resources of Illinois, the Midwest, or Southeast, and ability to coordinate and communicate effectively with a team of analysts to complete archaeological project reports. Must possess a valid driver's license and insurance.

Preferred Qualifications: A research agenda focused on inferring from zooarchaeological remains the processes of social, ecological, and cultural change, as well as human-animal adaptations. Previous supervisory experience.

This is a full-time, academic professional, grant supported, 12-month position subject to the continued availability of funding and programmatic need. The starting date is negotiable and the salary is commensurate with experience.
