GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Katarina Ruscic, M.D., Ph.D, of the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine (DACCPM) at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is seeking a motivated and experienced candidate to join her research project. Our current work seeks to elucidate the molecular and cellular physiology underlying lymphatic vessel contractility using mouse models. The work is performed within the laboratory of Timothy Padera, Ph.D., a leader in lymphatic imaging, tumor growth and lymphatic metastasis and the Edwin Steele Laboratories for Tumor Biology, a world class cancer research group.

To accomplish the overarching goals of this project, the candidate will be expected to complete the following techniques: rodent lymphatic surgery, RNA and protein isolation, qPCR, Western blot, immunohistochemistry (IHC)/immunocytochemistry (ICC), various imaging techniques (intravital microscopy, confocal microscopy, etc.), analysis of raw data in various software programs (MATLAB, GraphPad Prism, Excel and ImageJ) and graphical presentation of results.

This role is suited for an individual looking to pursue an advanced research degree. The candidate will be strongly encouraged to present work in weekly lab meetings and at conferences. Applicants with experience in rodent work are preferred.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Please note, the functions below are representative of major duties that are typically associated with these positions. Specific responsibilities may vary based upon departmental needs. Similarly, not all duties that have been outlined will be assigned to each position.

  • Understands and applies basic scientific techniques
  • Communicates well with PI and follows PI instructions on experiments
  • Sets up and prepares routine experiments as directed
  • Prepares lab reagents, chemicals, instruments, and equipment as directed
  • Conducts analysis of results and may begin interpretation of results
  • Maintains a detailed electronic laboratory notebook
  • Listens to feedback and continues to learn and grow

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
  • Ability to perform or learn rodent work (includes proper handling, delivery of anesthetic and dissection of various tissues)
  • Ability to learn rodent lymphatic surgery
  • Ability to perform common molecular biology techniques at the benchtop (ex. RNA and protein isolation)
  • Ability to perform tissue culture work
  • Strong communication skills to work with collaborators and team members
  • Fluency with MATLAB programming is preferred


Qualifications
EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor of Science degree required.

EXPERIENCE:
  • New university graduates with a high level of laboratory experience (via course work, internships, etc.) will be considered for the Research Technician I position outlined above. One year of experience with rodent work is preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • The candidate will be working in a standard MGH research laboratory and with small animals (mice) in the MGH animal facility.
