GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Chemical Neurobiology Lab within the Massachusetts General Hospital's Center for Genomic Medicine and the Center for the Neuroscience of Psychedelics is currently seeking a highly motivated, talented and science enthusiastic Research Technician with a hands-on background in neurobiology, molecular biology, or a related field. The Research Tech will work under the general direction of the PI and Laboratory Director Dr. Stephen Haggarty and under direct supervision of the Program Manager Dr. Surya Reis. This person is expected to conduct cutting-edge research in the fields of neuroscience, human stem cell biology, in vivo pharmacology, and chemical biology. This person will also be engaged in all aspects of laboratory management for all projects in a highly collaborative manner within MGH and externally.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Supports and assists the Program Manager in all laboratory activities.

• Supports and executes animal colony management and maintenance, including maintenance of colony database.

• Performs and assists with in vivo pharmacology assays, and tissue collection in rodents, including generation of primary neuronal cultures.

• Experimental focus on culturing rodent and human neuronal cell models to support cellular assays for high-throughput compound testing.

• Performs experiments involving western blotting, immunocytochemistry, histology, molecular biology.

• Assists in the design, execution, documentation, and interpretation of research experiments and results.

• Under the supervision of the Program Manager, responsible for lab organization, logistics, and maintenance, including day-to-day upkeep of equipment such as fridges and freezers, ordering and restocking of reagents and consumables.

• Helps with administrative tasks including safety-related matters, compliance, and tracking of documents as required and assigned.

• Helps with collection of and accurate recording of procedures and results, maintenance of lab databases.

• Helps with organization and maintenance of cell repository.

• Develops and implements lab's policies and procedures in conjunction with PI and Program Manager.

• Attention to detail, consistency and standardized methodologies and ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic, fast paced, team-oriented environment is necessary.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Highly motivated and energetic, with the ability to work in a dynamic, diverse team environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills required.
  • Experience with molecular biology, biochemical assays desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve and analytical skills required.
  • Competency with rodent handling, husbandry, survival surgeries wanted.
  • Interest in learning new techniques is essential.
  • Ability to multi-task and work with deadlines is required.
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written needed.


Qualifications
EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree in related science field is required.

EXPERIENCE:

2+ years of experience in research-related field is required.
