Position Purpose:

Assists with organizing and conducting a variety of laboratory experiments by applying established methods, procedures, and techniques in a neurosurgery research laboratory under the supervision of the PI. Participates in applied science in the areas of severe pediatric brain trauma, traumatic seizures, post-traumatic epilepsy and brain plasticity. Works with a dynamic team with the goal of increasing our understanding of how the developing brain responds to traumatic brain injury in order to improve children's health.

Key Accountabilities:

Research/Experiments

  • Assists with planning and scheduling of animal surgeries.
  • Sets up and monitors experiments including setting up for animal surgeries and post-surgical care of animals.
  • Orders animals and reagents.
  • Performs bench work and post-surgical care.
  • May assist with surgery and anesthesia.
  • Identifies, troubleshoots and corrects or recommends solutions to problems associated with experimental methods, procedures and techniques; or equipment and facilities.
  • Ensures adherence to laboratory safety requirements including general and chemical/hazardous waste safety disposal methods.
  • Under the direction of the PI creates and submits IACUC amendments.
  • Maintain PI's DEA license.
Data Collection
  • Collects data, enters data into databases, animal surgery records, and data storage devices. Converts paper documents to electronic records.
  • Keeps a detailed laboratory book and electronic notebook recording lab and animal work on a daily basis that is easy for others to read, understand, and repeat the procedures described.
  • Prepares appropriate and understandable representations of data such as graphs and charts to present in lab meeting.
  • Performs basic analyses of EEG's and MRI's.
  • Performs immunohistochemistry and Western blots.
Laboratory Management
  • Oversees the day-to-day management of the laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Assists the PI with interns and new staff through the process of onboarding including safety trainings, CITI trainings and other required training to be added to the IACUC protocols.
  • Ensures that all research staff be up to date with safety and chemical hygiene trainings.
  • Researches manufacturers and suppliers for equipment.
  • Maintains records of invoices, tracks spending on grants, and acts to correct incorrect charges.
  • Checks CCM invoices for accuracy.
  • Assists PI and investigators in ensuring that all animal care standards and IACUC protocols are met absolutely stringently by all members of the investigative team and are appropriately updated and submitted as per institutional standards


Qualifications
Skills and Knowledge:
  • Background in neuroscience or related field is strongly recommended.
  • Competence in several laboratory methods including Western blots, zymography, histology, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy as well as animal handling and husbandry. While candidates may not have all skills needed and training will be provided, experience in at least some of these methods is favored.
  • Ability to work independently with good judgment, organization, attention to detail, and time management skills.
  • Able to work with hands in a sometimes fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to manage laboratory inventory and records.
  • Ability to problem-solve.
  • Willingness to work with/be exposed to hazardous materials such as radioactive materials, infectious materials, and/or hazardous chemicals.
  • Knowledge of computers and software applications.
  • Ability and willingness to employ flexible work hours at various times and to work some nights and weekends as required.

Experience

Laboratory experience as part of a part-time college internship is preferred.

Education

Bachelor's degree required with a major in one of the Biological Sciences
