Position Summary:
This classified position involves laboratory research support for studies of bacteriophages. Guided by the principal investigators and supervised by the lab manager, the Research Specialist will generate data for ongoing projects in the lab. These projects include the study of viral adaptation using the bacteriophage phiX174 and the characterization of novel phages from honeybees. In addition, they will assist with maintenance of the laboratory, train and provide technical support to lab personnel, and assist in supervising undergraduate researchers.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or related field



  • Following pre-established procedures or protocols
  • Analyzing scientific data
  • Keeping complete and accurate records
  • Working in a team environment


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or related field.
  • Good knowledge of scientific principles; laboratory safety practices; laboratory terminology, equipment, materials, and procedures; and, the fundamental laboratory methods relating to biology.
  • Demonstrated ability to use good interpersonal and communication skills; work with computers, especially word processing, spreadsheets and file management; formulate and execute daily plans while balancing simultaneous projects.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills and techniques quickly; keep accurate records; perform tasks with diligence and accuracy; work independently as well as cooperatively with others in a laboratory environment.
  • Two years experience working in research lab.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform molecular biology procedures such as PCR, cloning and sequencing.
  • Experience working with microbial systems.
  • Working knowledge of R or other programming language.
  • Working knowledge of bioinformatics analysis software.






Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
  • Ability to lift, carry and/or otherwise move up to 25 lbs; perform repetitive motions for up to 1 hour while standing or seated at lab bench
