GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Cognitive Outcomes of Geriatric Surgery (COGS) Research Group is seeking a responsible, highly motivated, and enthusiastic candidate for the position of Research Assistant (RA) I. Our mission is to understand why surgery and general anesthesia cause both acute and long-lasting cognitive impairment in older adults. As such, we are interested in the impact of common geriatric conditions such as mild cognitive impairment and frailty in the development of postoperative delirium; the role of surgery-induced inflammation on cognitive outcomes; and whether surgery/anesthesia exacerbate occult pre-existing cerebral neurodegeneration. The PIs are NIH-funded clinical anesthesiologists and the multidisciplinary team includes surgeons, neurologists with expertise in memory disorders, a neuropsychologist, and scientists expert in biomarker analysis and discovery. The RA is responsible for assisting and facilitating all aspects of the clinical research studies. Working under the general supervision of the Senior Research Assistant and PIs, the RA is responsible for following established policies and procedures and providing assistance on clinical research studies. The RA is responsible for the following activities: recruiting and evaluating patients; collecting and organizing patient data; performing pre- and postoperative clinical screening such as memory and delirium testing; drawing blood samples; maintaining and updating data generated by the study; scheduling patients for follow-up study visits and calls; IRB applications; and adherence to regulatory requirements.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist on clinical research studies as per study guidelines and protocols.


  • Recruit and evaluate potential study patients in the preoperative testing center or surgical clinic


  • Conduct baseline assessments for cognitive impairment, mood, and function; obtain a preoperative blood sample


  • Responsible for collecting data via the Electronic Medical Record and maintaining patient information database for study. May be required to input data, do minimum analysis, and run various reports. Maintains patient records as part of record keeping function.


  • Assess patients postoperatively using clinical tools and collect blood samples (some weekend availability required; weekdays shortened to compensate)


  • Conduct follow-up phone interviews and maintain long-term data on study patients


  • Assist with composing Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions; maintain active protocols


  • Assist with development of informed consent documents, study materials, and other documents, as applicable; assure compliance with regulatory requirements


  • Contribute to the research team (e.g. serve as a liaison between patient and physician / PI; assist laboratory RAs with blood processing /analysis)


  • 8. All other duties as assigned

    Qualifications
    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Qualified applicants must have at least a bachelor's degree. New graduate with relevant course or project work and ability to work with older patients and medical personnel in a large and complex clinical environment is a must.

    SKILLS / ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

    • Excellent interpersonal skills and desire to work with older surgical patients
    • Strong organizational and oral and written communication skills
    • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated and yet function well as a member of a team
    • Comfortable navigating outpatient and inpatient hospital settings and interacting with a wide variety of clinicians
    • Willingness to learn and become proficient in phlebotomy skills
    • Willingness and ability to assist, after training, with laboratory procedures involving blood sample processing and assays
    • Capable of meticulous record keeping, data management, and regulatory compliance
    • Willingness to give a two-year commitment
