The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics is seeking a Quality and Operational Improvement Engineer to apply epidemiological/biostatistical methods to identify and develop data collection tools and data elements for the Iowa Newborn Screening Program's (INSP) Long-Term Follow-Up (LTFU) Program along with LTFU Team; Analyze quantitative and qualitative data using biostatistics and informatics and interpret and report results. Help to utilize the data to inform and improve the quality of the program overall, particularly laboratory and follow-up processes. Assist with other data needs of the Iowa Newborn Screening Program as needed. This is a specified term position.

Duties to include:

  • Collaborate with LTFU NBS Team on a daily basis; collaborate with other INSP staff as needed.
  • Select, develop, and maintain a data collection tool or database for the INSP LTFU Program.
  • Identify data elements for the LTFU program; including general and demographic data elements as well as disorder-specific data elements; work closely with INSP staff and physicians to determine data elements.
  • Enter and/or review NewSTEPs Quality Indicators into NewSTEPs repository; reconcile cases/data entered into the repository. Apply epidemiological/biostatistical methodologies to utilize data in the repository to improve program processes.
  • Participate in various INSP meetings (LTFU; Follow-Up; disorder specific meetings, cutoff meetings, overall Follow-Up, CQI, All-Team, etc.) as assigned.
  • Represent the interests of the University and of unit leadership in the use of resources to meet service and productivity demands within unit goals and budgets; strive to promote continual process and quality improvement.

Division of Medical Genetics & Genomics:

The Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics is committed to excellence in providing comprehensive services for children, adults and prenatal patients in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of genetic conditions. The Division's multidisciplinary team is comprised of board certified medical geneticists, a molecular genetic pathologist, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, genetic counselors, nurses, and dietitians. Our clinics include: General Genetics Clinics, Metabolic Genetics Clinics, Connective Tissue Disorder Clinics, Neurofibromatosis Clinics, Cancer Predisposition, Multidisciplinary Tuberous Sclerosis Clinics, and Outreach Genetics Clinics. Genetic diseases and disorders affect families as well as individuals. The medical team provides the information, support and follow-up needed to make informed decisions. Our medical genetics team collaborates with state and federal agencies, educators, researchers, support groups and others to provide the latest information and treatment options for Iowans and their families.

Required Qualifications:
  • A Master's in Public Health or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • 1 year experience in performance improvement initiatives.
  • Experience in selecting, analyzing, and interpreting quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to travel.

Desired Qualifications:
  • A Master's degree with a focus area in epidemiology or biostatistics is highly desirable.
  • Some (6 months) experience working in epidemiology or biostatistics.
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders.

This position is eligible for remote work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment.
