Summary:

Reporting to the Manager of Process Engineering, Automation Deployment Engineering, Engineer II is responsible for providing support and actively participating in the implementation, characterization, improvement, and qualification/validation of manufacturing processes for replicate manufacturing equipment used in the scale-up of new or existing Dexcom products.

These duties include understanding current and future needs of our manufacturing and automation processes, evaluating new technologies and concepts for meeting those needs, and rapidly demonstrating feasibility of such technologies through rigorous modeling, analysis, prototyping, experimentation, and other risk identification and mitigation activities.

Functional Description:

Develops new or modified manufacturing processes, defines processing or handling equipment requirements and specifications, and reviews processing techniques and methods applied in the manufacture, fabrication, and evaluation of products. Involvement may begin at any step from pilot plant to full-scale manufacturing. Participate in design requirement review with appropriate engineering/scientific personnel to ensure compatibility of processing methods. Compiles and evaluates test data to determine appropriate limits and variables for process or material specifications. May conceive and plan projects involving the definition and selection of new concepts, equipment automation technology, and approaches in the processing or development of new or improved processes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the assembly process design and inform the mechanical and electrical design of components and assemblies containing multiple materials.
  • Provide support to develop and maintain project timelines and provide updates and feedback to project leadership.
  • Work within project timelines and provides updates and feedback to project leadership.
  • Demonstrate hands-on technical understanding and provide guidance and training to junior engineers and technicians on test methods and data analysis techniques.
  • Participate in risk identification and product specification definition activities as a member of a cross-functional team.
  • Provide technical assistance in scaling up equipment and processes from prototype to pilot to full scale manufacturing. Provide design and assembly requirements working within scope as determined by business and schedule needs.
  • Perform statistically robust and industry standard analysis of data, and present findings to technical teams.
  • Develop and maintain technical project timelines and provide updates and feedback to project leadership.
  • Develop, document and optimize manufacturing process/assembly steps and operating procedures for new stations, equipment, and processes within a regulated quality system.
  • Support the successful knowledge and tech transfer of new manufacturing platforms into manufacturing, which could include site-to-site transfers, as needed.
  • Effectively implement problem-solving skills and techniques to identify potential risks and develop/implement mitigation plans as needed.
  • Exercise judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action.
  • This position assumes and performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • Ability to run self-directed projects, maintain timelines, stay organized, and balance multiple activities in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of high reliability, high volume manufacturing processes and designs.
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity/uncertainty and a willingness to try new/challenging things.
  • Proven ability to work hands-on in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of high reliability, high volume manufacturing processes, and designs.
  • Familiar with data analysis methods and analysis software
  • Detailed-oriented with strong time management skills.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and personal interaction skills

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Medical device industry experience
  • Automated equipment experience
  • Lean Six Sigma or Six Sigma training and certification preferred
  • Deep understanding of formal DOE methodologies and techniques
  • Statistical experience in JMP or Minitab

Experience and Education

  • Typically requires a Bachelors degree in a technical discipline, and a minimum of 2-5 years related experience or Masters degree and 0-2 years equivalent experience.
