Position Overview

A Principal Manager in the USG Business Development (BD) Central team is a key member of the USG BD Unit, supporting the achievement of USG's annual new business targets while working under the supervision of the Director, USG BD Central. The Principal Manager partners with peers in the Central BD team and counterparts in DAI's technical sectors and regional portfolio teams to ensure that DAI proposals are technically and operationally cogent and of the highest quality. They advise on go/no go decisions for bids (in partnership with BD teams embedded in DAI's technical sectors) and organize and deliver quality capture efforts. They are responsible for mentoring and coaching BD staff at all levels as they undertake business development functions.

The Principal Manager will oversee a team of BD Specialists and BD Associates.

This is a full-time, permanent position

Responsibilities

Pipeline Development

• In partnership with counterparts in DAI's governance sector, and under the guidance of the Director for USG BD Central, ensure that new business efforts are prioritized and resourced appropriately.

• Ensure that pipelines are "healthy," consisting of biddable and winnable near-, medium-, and long-term opportunities.

• Ensure that pipeline is constantly refreshed through marketing efforts, research, and intelligence gathering.

• Liaise with the regional portfolios and country focal points to ensure input during Business and Acquisition Strategic Plan (BASP) process, and support BASP development and execution at USG level.

• Ensure regular review of Business and Acquisition (BAP) spendings.

Proposal Development

• Provide counsel and advice to proposal managers, coordinators, and champions/writers on all proposal efforts, from pre-positioning to proposal execution.

• Serve as a sounding board for proposal teams in developing cogent, winning approaches (both technical and cost) during all stages of proposal development.

• Contribute to technical incubators and technical and cost review teams to ensure development of high-quality proposal submissions; troubleshoot where necessary and support post-review efforts as needed.

• Serve as a proposal champion, proposal manager, and/or lead, contributing, or integrating technical writer on priority proposal efforts.

• Coordinate closely within the BD Central team to execute overall USG business unit priorities.

Marketing Leadership

• In conjunction with the VP of USG Business Development and Director, USG BD Central, support the development and implementation of country and/or regional marketing plans to cultivate relationships, build pipelines, and articulate and sell DAI products and services to clients and partners.

Continuous Improvement

• Mentor and work closely with staff across the BD department to hone and improve their own business development skills

• Serve as BD trainer as requested.

Staff Management

• Supervise and mentor a team of BD Specialists and Associates.

• Set clear expectations and provide feedback on a regular and ongoing basis.

Additional responsibilities as deemed necessary.

Qualifications & Skills

Minimum Requirements:

• Grade 7: Minimum of 7 years of relevant professional experience with at least 5 years of business experience in proposal and project management, including development of technical and cost proposals, and a college degree. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

• Proven skills in business development and in client relationship management, staff development, and project management.

• Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex or technical information clearly and tailor communication style to diverse audiences.

• Demonstrated skills managing strong, high-quality proposals for USAID or other donor clients.

• Able to build and maintain excellent working relationships with staff at all levels of the organization and external clients from diverse backgrounds.

• Demonstrated success managing/mentoring/guiding a team. Adept at providing guidance to direct reports and team members to resolve problems and overcome obstacles.

• Demonstrated ability to effectively manage change.

• Ability to lead and manage in a matrixed structure, working collaboratively and effectively across business units, departments, functions, and teams.

• A track record of being innovative, while assessing risks, and making decisions that will further the department and company in achieving and exceeding its goals.

• Able and willing to travel to any country where DAI currently operates or may wish to operate, barring times when DAI Global Security has deemed travel unsafe.

• Demonstrated ability to lead diverse teams, create inclusive work environments, and work effectively within a culturally diverse environment.

• Authorized to work in the United States.

Preferred, but not required:

• An understanding and experience working within the democracy and governance programming.

• Proficiency in a second language (French, Spanish, Russian, or Arabic preferred).

• Demonstrated understanding of customer priorities.

• Familiarity with DAI's business development process.

Supervisory Requirements:

• Will supervise a team of BD Specialists and BD Associates.

Compensation & Benefits:

For employees working the United States, the full-time equivalent annual base salary for this position is expected to be between $116,288 to $143,003. Salary for part-time employees will be prorated based on actual hours worked. Actual offers will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, qualifications, relevant education, experience, skills, seniority, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Eligible U.S. based employees, will be able to enroll in medical, dental and vision insurance, plus a 401(k)-retirement plan with a company match. Additionally, employees will be eligible for company-paid annual leave (vacation & holidays), sick leave, parental leave; as well as short- and long-term disability coverage. Detailed information will be provided at the time a formal offer is extended.

For employees working outside of the United States, compensation and benefits will vary based on location.
