We are seeking a daytime prep cook to support student success in our salad kitchen.

This is a full-time, year-round position and generally works an 8 hour shift between the hours of 6:00 am - 3:00 pm, Monday - Friday and every sixth weekend.

Specific responsibilities:

Responsible for a specialized area of production as including but not limited to: complete setup, daily stocking and execution of cook to order Wellness and Omelet stations within Ruth's Marketplace; and, assisting in the bakery; general ingredient prep; slicing deli meats & cheeses; cutting produce in salad department support; assisting in Cost Management with stocking and inventory duties; These 7 prep cook positions, each one with a different focus, will work in a primary area as defined by a supervisor, but all trained to overlap and cover all areas of support for Ruth's Marketplace. - 45%

Attend daily staff huddles and staff in-services. This includes attending Allertrain,  Serve Safe, Emergency Action Plans, Business & Finance Updates, etc. - 5%

Wash pots and pans, clean griddles, clean deep fryers, and perform daily sanitation duties in accordance with local regulatory guidelines. This includes deep cleaning of equipment and kitchen areas during the non-academic times of year. - 15%

Support the work of the chefs, salad department supervisor or bakery supervisor by assisting in preparing recipe ingredients in advance of meals following standardized recipes and procedures (40-50 different recipes daily) which includes meal plans, summer conference business and catering. - 25%

Support in the preparation of all catering food and execution of catering functions as determined by a supervisor. - 10%

Perform additional duties as assigned and attend College required training. Regular attendance is required. Work in a manner that is aware of personal safety and the safety of others and observes safety, health and sanitation codes, regulations, or practices required by the College or governmental authority.

Supervision Exercised Over: 

  • 1-2 Student Marketplace Workers assisting on shift

Required Minimum Qualifications:
Education -

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

Experience and Credentials -

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse campus environment or commitment to do so as an employee of St. Norbert College.

  • 1-2 years experience as a line cook and prior work in a high volume food service setting is preferred.

  • Food Service Sanitation Certification or ability to obtain on the job

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities -

  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.

  • Ability to interact professionally with coworkers and customers, particularly in conflict situations.

  • Ability to interact politely and resolve customer service issues.

  • Ability to multitask, meet specific deadlines, and prioritize tasks and assignments.

  • Skilled in basic math computations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

  • Ability to exercise good judgement and decisions in an expeditious manner.

  • Skilled at setting a good example for others. 

  • Ability to concentrate and focus in a noisy environment.

  • Ability to pass a post offer functional capacity test.

Equipment Used:
Steam Kettles, knives, meat slicers, grills, deep fryers, convection ovens, buffalo chopper, food processors, blenders, pizza oven, dish machine, stand mixers, open range stovetops, steamers.

Working Conditions:
Positions generally work an 8 hour shift between the hours 6:00 am - 3:00 pm Monday - Friday and every sixth weekend. This position works in a fast-paced environment with frequent changes and generally stands most of their shift.

  • Position will need to stand and walk for most of the shift.  Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling up to 30 lbs occasionally.  Will need to perform kitchen actions such as bending, reaching, grasping, slicing, chopping, etc.
