Job Info

The India China Institute (ICI) at The New School seeks applications for a one-year position in 2022-23 as Postdoctoral Fellow in Cities and Citizenship. The fellow will be in residence at ICI for the 2022-23 academic year, to pursue publication and research plans on an existing or new project, to contribute to the ICI Cities and Citizenship research cluster, and relevant ICI events and programs.

ICI welcomes applications from those whose research focuses on cities, rural-urban flows, urban design and infrastructure, and public goods provision, addressing issues of membership, belonging, identity, contestation, and related questions. The geographic focus of research could be drawn from India, China, or could engage with China-India comparisons and connections. Applications are welcome from all social science and humanities disciplines, including interdisciplinary PhD programs.

ICI serves as a hub for research and public engagement on India, China and beyond. Its mission is to address issues of global concern through collaborative research and the formation of transnational networks of scholars and practitioners based in India, China, and elsewhere around the world. ICI is committed to studying global flows and frictions and helping direct these toward more sustainable and equitable outcomes. We believe that studying and thinking with the pasts and presents of India, China, and other countries in the global South can provide new frameworks that provide alternative perspectives to dominant understandings of global politics, culture, and design.

The New School, a private university in New York City's Greenwich Village, serves undergraduate and graduate students across a range of fields with a commitment to bringing practices in design and social research to studying issues of our time and challenging students to become engaged citizens dedicated to solving programs and contributing to the public good.

The New School is committed to actively recruiting from a diverse pool of applicants. We encourage candidates from groups underrepresented in US higher education to apply. The New School does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, color, creed, sex or gender (including gender identity and expression), pregnancy, sexual orientation, religion, religious practices, mental or physical disability, national or ethnic origin, citizenship status, veteran status, marital or partnership status, or any other legally protected status.
