Duties related to the College of Arts & Sciences:

The Zanne lab is searching for a Post-doctoral Associate in the Department of Biology at the University of Miami (Miami, FL). This position will be based out of Coral Gables, FL. Travel may be involved.

The Zanne Lab studies how wood is constructed and how that construction affects wood decay as mediated by various biotic and abiotic decay agents. We have ongoing experiments in Queensland and New South Wales, Australia where we are contrasting the relative roles of wood-dwelling microbes, termites, solar radiation and fire in impacting the rates of wood decay and the forms of carbon cycling. We have repeated measures of microbial community composition (fungi, bacteria, methanogens, and methanotrophs) and function in deadwood across multiple years and seasons for 16 species of wood either excluding or allowing termite access at multiple sites along a rainfall gradient. We are also beginning new projects in seasonally flooded grasslands in cerrado in Brazil, where termite mounds create novel elevated sites, shifts to woody flora and changes in carbon cycling. We use a variety of sensors to measure CO2 and CH4 carbon flux at different scales from individual pieces of deadwood and termite mounds to ecosystem and global levels. The Postdoctoral Associate will be primarily focused on investigating how wood traits, local climates, carbon gas fluxes, and seasons affect the rates of wood decay across 4 years and the turnover in microbial community composition and function across wood species, space and time. As possible, they will also help with field harvests in Australia and establish and analyze data from small-scale carbon sensors in Brazilian cerrado. Specifically, the postdoctoral associate will analyze data from Australia and conduct experiments and analyze field projects in Brazil to understand how deadwood decay and microbial and termite communities and solar radiation affect carbon cycling at different scales. The postdoctoral associate should have a background in bioinformatics, quantitative analyses, and/or carbon modeling, as well as interest or experience in tropical field work.

The Postdoctoral Associate will receive training in deadwood decay, wood traits, carbon cycling, global change and microbial community bioinformatic measures and will have the opportunity to develop skills in grant writing, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, and writing papers as lead and co-author. Please refer to https://zanne-lab.github.io/ for more details on our research.

Candidates must have a PhD in Biology or related discipline and research experience in quantitative analyses in R, carbon modelling and/or bioinformatics in any study system, with preference for those with experience in wood decay communities. The candidate must have a deep interest in biotic interactions, wood decay, carbon cycling and global change. Beneficial qualifications include experience in and willingness to do tropical field ecology, carbon sensor development and deployment and manuscript writing. Other desirable qualifications include a strong work ethic and a strong track record of publications.

This is a three-year position (one year contract with an expectation for renewal provided that first-year performance is satisfactory). Start date is flexible, but an ideal candidate would begin immediately or as soon as possible.

Please include your CV (including contact information for 3 references), a short statement of previous research, and a cover letter explaining your interest in this position and how it will support you toward your career goals.
